United up gauges Halifax to Mainline

Tue Feb 19, 2019 9:55 am

This summer 2 of 3 EWR-YHZ flights will be up gauged to a mainline 320 and A319. The third flight remains an ERJ145.

Wonder if the mainline aircraft will also cover the recently announced YHZ-ORD service? At one time they did operate EWR-YHZ-ORD with an E175.....although no thru passengers were carried.

Wow that’s quite the upgauge. Skipping the 70-76 seaters and going to mainline. That’s how YYT used to be. It also shows how YHZ is an extremely seasonal market.

Always pulling for YHZ to expand further in the US markets. Great add, but very seasonal. Hopefully we see more AC growth as Hali is the gateway to the Maritimes.

Probably not before the oil/offshore improves.

Is the upgauge also in part of UA making EWR as mainline as possible?

Aviation in Atlantic Canada is trapped in a Catch-22. Destinations and competition will not increase until demand improves, while demand is not going to improve until more destinations are available and competition increases (and therefore fares decrease).

It's looking to be a very good summer for YHZ! AA has returned to the market with (summer seasonal) daily PHL-YHZ service as well as (summer seasonal) Saturday-only LGA-YHZ service - both operated by E175s. UA will also be using the E175 to offer a resumption of daily ORD-YHZ service in June. I assume DL's transfer of JFK-YHZ to LGA-YHZ also proved to be successful?

Well that’s a pleasant surprise! I expected to see the up gauge come at the expense of frequency but to keep both (even just seasonally) is great for YHZ and the Maritimes in general.

The pre-clearance area will be busy this summer!

Didn’t UA also do IAD-YHZ at one point as well?

I understand demand to the Canadian Maritimes from the US point of sale is up due to favorable exchange rates.

I think Air Canada did many many years ago with a CRJ (long enough ago that CRJ’s were mainline).

United ran E-170's for many years from IAD and ORD to YHZ. (prior to merger and after)
