Air France temporarily suspends service to CCS

Thu Feb 21, 2019 1:10 am

Air France is suspending service to Caracas, Venezuela, on the 23rd, 24th and 25th of this month due to the potential for unrest there. Good move by AF - it is one of the few foreign airlines operating in Venezuela whose flight crews still layover there.

I thought some French companies and Turkish companies were helping the Venezuela through out all this mess, and also with their gold. Also recently French Energy firm agreed to investing $400 million dollars in to PDVSA.

Given that Air France is only minority-owned by the French Government (actually, Air France-KLM, and that's 14.3%) and that Maurel & Prom is not a significant shareholder in Air France-KLM (if at all), all these things have nothing to do with Air France and the latter does as seems to be the best fit for the company.

Not sure what the above would have to do with a decision made by Air France to protect its assets and the well being of their staff.

Guess if it does go tits up and the army swop sides you don't want assets and staff stuck there. AF must have done a risk assessment recently.

Especially since Venezuela is shutting its border with Brazil tonight and Colombia really soon. Somethings in motion, best not to be around till the dust settles.

Seems like soliders are leaving their posts at some boarder crossings.

The FAA has issued an advisory about overflying Venezuela.

And after the turmoil of this past weekend, Air France returns to Caracas CCS but with a change: all inbound flights to Venezuela will stop en route at Martinique FDF for a crew change; no more layovers in Venezuela for the foreseeable future.

Are AF and IB the only airlines to do so? What about tap, plus ultra or air europa?

TAP not only has a stop at CUR for that purpose, it also sends a wet leased Euro Atlantic 767 to CCS. Plus Ultra I don't really know. Air Europa's crews continue, up to last week, to layover at CCS. There were recently some protests from its unions to stop doing so; one full crew was stuck in CCS over the last few days.
