Snow at PHX?

Thu Feb 21, 2019 5:25 am

So LAS recently had some snow, but not enough to cause disruptions. Central/Southern AZ is scheduled to see more snow than NV tonight and that would likely result in delays which would be more impactful at PHX than LAS as the former is much bigger for connections. Will be interesting to see how AA handles this.

I live 20 minutes from PHX. Snow is not in the forecast for the metro area afaik.

Correct, per winter storm warning snow level is about 3000 feet, and tempurature is suppose to remain above freezing so if it did come down as snow it will melt when it hits the ground.

TUS is more likely to see snow than PHX. 2400' vs. 1100' elevation. We're hoping for it--if it's cold and wet it might as well snow. Last measurable snow at TUS was six years ago today--1 inch on 2/20/13.

I lived in PHX for 30 years, and in that time snow had only managed to reach the ground(and melt immediately) once back in 1990. You may see some snow in the higher elevations surrounding the valley, but basically never on a PHX runway.

For historical context, the last time there was measurable snow in PHX was back in the 1930's. I believe it was 1 inch.

Confirming that the +/- 1300' elevation difference between PHX and TUS makes a big difference. Tucson's had around 20 instances of 1 inch or more snow recorded officially by the NWS or it's predecessor since 1937. Record was nearly 7 inches on December 8/9, 1971. Yes, that did shut down TUS.

It's not going to snow in PHX , what you saw was for the mountains. Places in view of PHX will get good snow, but it's not gonna fall at the low elevation airport.

Also you need to remember somewhere like LAS is near places that get a lot of snow. Plows and salt trucks are plentiful nearby because of mountains. Nevada and Arizona have plenty of trucks and plows. If they really needed to treat the runway at LAS they would be able to. A place like MCO or TPA would be much more isolated if there was a freak snow event. They would be much further from plows or salt trucks etc etc.

Did LAS get any meaningful amounts of snow on its runway? Would make for some really cool photos.

The first big wave came through the valley starting around 8pm, it didn't stick then, we had lite snow of and on all night, it's just started really snowing in my area again 2:50am.

Looks nice, but there are a lot of homes without power and the temp is dropping.

Snow is now out of the forecast for all lower elevation areas of southern Arizona. Just rain. I was hoping to wake up to white stuff, but 'tis not to be. Have to go up to Mt. Lemmon (9000').

It is when it's the largest single day of snowfall in history for them:

Regarding PHX, the airport is at a fairly low elevation so snow seldom occurs, and when it does, it won't stick. My house backs up against the McDowell Mountains at a higher elevation, and we may see snow flurries at one point but it won't stick either, although it may up on the mountains.

Especially out here, driving to fast, using power poles to help stop, our cul-de-sac had no power for most of last night, thankfully we have our powerwalls plus a log fireplace, so we were good, most of the homes in this area have firplaces so they at least had heat.

Wow did not realize PHX is actually a 1000 feet up. I thought it would be closer to the SoCal hot cities at or even below sea level (Thermal, Yuma etc). It’s actually surprising that PHX gets as hellishly hot as it does being a 1000 feet up.

Should have known. Measurable snow this morning in Tucson. Still snowing as of 0930, over an inch at my house which is 10 miles east of TUS and a little higher.

TUS getting some good snow. University of Arizona campus getting a good dusting as well. Great scene on the mountains North and East of PHX.

That is a very cold storm. We had it in socal near BUR yesterday and during the day! we had flurries at 1000’ feet. It was a snow hail, round like hail but soft and white and not. dense. If you gathered it together in your hand it formed slush balls.

There's a dusting on the foothills behind Scottsdale, I'd say the snow level almost got down to 2000'. Weird sight to see taking the kids to school.
