FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

It looks like this year UA's SFO-MUC flight won't end in October instead it will be flown daily in both October and November. It will be interesting to see if the flight is still around come December or if hibernation begins in December.

Thanks for posting. Any thoughts on why OAG is not yet reflecting multiple new B6 frequencies ex-BOS starting in Sep/Oct 2019?

It’s nice to see B6 get a little more aggressive with its small slot portfolio at LGA. Those ACK flights will be very high yielding and probably more profitable than a fifth flight to FLL during the low/hurricane season.

I suspect B6 is feeling pressure from NK entering the FLLRIC market.

Sad to see the drawdowns at PAP. The civic unrest there doesn’t seem to be dissipating. Very sad.

Looks like UA*/OO begins PIR and ATY on Apr 3: Daily schedule looks like this:
ATY-PIR-DEN
DEN-PIR r/t
DEN-ATY r/t
DEN-PIR-ATY

MSS and OGS begin May 3, I could only find flt. 5140 ORD-OGS-MSS-IAD, 5164 IAD-OGS, and 5125 OGS-ORD, doesn't look like that's all loaded in UA's website yet.

Just looked and UA's SFO-MUC flight is bookable through Jan 2020. I guess it's not seasonal anymore?

It is an impressive growth for MUC, though, with daily A380 on LH and 789 on UA (with the year-round 3x daily to FRA).

Sure, but the trade is definitely for less utilization! And repos cost a lot of money.

They just extended their schedule recently. Was it not in the extension?

Looks like AA is matching UA by also adding a 3rd ORD-PVD frequency. Nice to see and both now have a decent business schedule for a market of PVD’s size.

Like you stated that's impressive growth. Just a few years ago UA's SFO-European flights consisted of LHR, FRA and CDG. Both LHR and FRA where 1x daily from December through March, now daily double year around. CDG just a few years ago started year around service and now UA has seasonal service to ZRH, MUC (for now continues through January could be year around), and UA's launching year around AMS this spring. Then later this year 3x weekly service to MEL, increased service to ICN, and seasonal service to DEL in DEC 2019. What is fueling this growth out of SFO? Is it because the Bay area and Silicon Valley are growing or is it something else?

MSS and OGS begin May 3, I could only find flt. 5140 ORD-OGS-MSS-IAD, 5164 IAD-OGS, and 5125 OGS-ORD, doesn't look like that's all loaded in UA's website yet.

Piecing things together it looks like this is the schedule, give or take a few minutes on MSS times which are not out there yet.

0830 MSS
0907 OGS
0937 OGS
1107 ORD
1142 ORD
1450 OGS
1520 OGS
1557 MSS
1627 MSS
1811 IAD
1846 IAD
2021 OGS
2051 OGS
2128 MSS

A quick tally this morning on EAS/Alternate EAS including upcoming changes:

107 markets in the lower 48

57 jet service
--45 Skywest (includes GRI which may be bid by AA rather than OO)
--7 Contour
--5 other

50 prop service
--16 Boutique
--15 Cape
--11 Southern
--6 Air Choice One

It would make more sense for SFO-MUC to be year round as opposed to the less connective SFO-AMS, which is year round

I think a couple of those OO EAS may also be bid by Delta, but I don’t swear to that. Care to list them out?

It looks like they’re going to puddle jump the 35 miles between OGS and MSS before going to ORD or IAD. Sounds stupid to do but if it means more EAS money for Skywest to provide any kind of service up there than I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Brazil continues to struggle: Manaos and Brasilia are not only being downgauged (757 to 7M8) but also frequencies reduced. Montevideo, Uruguay MVD is also being reduced from daily to 5x w, no change of equipment (763).

The other 2 EAS prop markets are served by a newcomer, Advanced Air, which got Silver City, NM to ABQ and PHX on Jan 5. Thanks knope2001 for figuring out the MSS and OGS skds.

A few other EAS jet service markets not served by SkyWest include:
American: GCK and ALO (Envoy), ART (Piedmont), and JLN however I have heard that AA is rebidding JLN subsidy free.
United: PQI (Commutair)
Ultimate Jet Charters: MBL

The list includes Skywest markets operated as DL* but when those come up for periodic rebid the proposal comes from Skywest, not Delta, That's just like the Skywest bids do for other markets like Muskegon (UA*), Buttle (DL*), Laurel/Hattiesburg (AA*). etc. But I don't think its Skywest paper on the GRI-DFW bid, and I think Envoy has often flown it.

American itself bids for ALO, GRI, GCK, ART and JLN (which is graduating out of EAS) and service is coordinated within their AA* planning process to be operated by whomever they determine. United also bid directly for PQI and it has operated with ExpressJet and Commutair. Although it seems, then, that AA is actually at-risk for those cities (and UA for PQI) I hesitate to state that flatly because the topic has been debated before and I'm not sure the debate was settled.

Here's what I came up with for OO markets flown for EAS including upcoming ones:

APN
ATY
BFF
BJI
BMI
BTM
CDC
CGX
CIU
CKB
CMX
CNY
COD
DIK
DVL
EAR
EAU
ESC
GRI
HIB
HYS
IMT
INT
JMS
LAR
LBF
LBL
LWB
MEI
MKG
MSS
OGS
PAH
PBG
PIB
PIR
PLN
PRC
PUB
RHI
SHD
SLN
UIN
VEL
WYS

It was a quick tally but I think I got 'em all. At any rate it's a big portion of the EAS network.

Yup, those are the same ones I got on my "other" list, minus Joplin which I already excluded since AA* will operate without EAS. The seven Contour markets are Cedar City, Page, Macon, Fort Leonard Wood, Parkersburg, Beckley and Tupelo. The LF TUP-BNA listing showing them at 1.4 flights in June versus 4 last year represents Contour putting the E135 into TUP.

The thing about small regional markets like these is they mostly draw from the immediate area. Once a traveler has to drive any appreciable distance they will tend to bypass other regional airports and keep driving until they get to an airport with bigger planes, more competition, better fares and more nonstops. Were Massena to lose their service not much of their market would drive to OGS to catch the UA* flights to Chicago or Washington. They'd keep on driving to SYR, or go the other direction to BTV. For Florida-bound travelers the Spirit and Allegiant flights at PBG and OGS do pull from a broader area because of low fares and nonstops -- they are an exception to the rule. But beyond those inroads if people have to drive any appreciable distance to a "local" airport they will keep driving.

Silver City is one market. Two routes still make it one market.
Other notshown is Mokukele Airlines' Imperial County, CA service with flights to LAX.

Very sad.

ACK has become the SDQ of this summer, lol. Although I do see that JFK-ACK is now 4 a day on most days.

With how aggressive they have been at adding flights to ACK this summer. I wonder if they will add a couple of EWR-ACK next summer and add to MVY. JFK-ACK/MVY are constantly one of their top 5 margin routes for B6. I would imagine there is plenty of demand in NJ and westchester for MVY also.

As for the other cuts, seems like they have started their yearly summer adjustments earlier this year after conceding they need more spares. Looks like for FLL-RIC, they moved to one A320 vs 2 E90s. A320 should be a lot more competitive in cost vs NK A319.

MF SEA-SZX NOV 0>0.4[0.3]

I don't think MF's SEA-SZX flights were ever seasonal. But it's an increase. Their load-factors have been improving.

The LF TUP-BNA listing showing them at 1.4 flights in June versus 4 last year represents Contour putting the E135 into TUP.

That is a big upgauge from the J31/32 (configured at only 9 seats) to the E135 (configured at 30 seats). A spoke with Contour CEO Matt Chaifetz the other night at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new terminal at CEC (Crescent City CA), and he said he couldn't wait to get rid of the Jetstreams. Counting down the days.

And speaking of CEC, that is another LF EAS (AEAS to be exact) jet market that is not in your list: CEC-OAK. SBA-OAK/LAS/SMF (coming soon) are at risk. Not sure if PGA-LAS is at risk or not.

Mr. Chaifetz also said the other night that LF will be adding a second CEC-OAK flight 4x weekly for the summer season, and that is outside the 7x weekly flight subsidiy. They operated a 90% load factor last August (having only started the route in April), so they feel they can benefit from the extra lift, as can the community.
Worked for WestAir, Apollo Airways, Desert Pacific, Western, AirCal and American Airlines (Retired). Flight Memory: 180 airports, 90 airlines, 75 a/c types, 403 routes, 58 countries (by air), 6 continents. 1,117,006 passenger miles.

Great to hear that they seem to be doing well with the ER3 in general and in CEC in particular. Hopefully TUP does just as well.

0830 MSS
0907 OGS
0937 OGS
1107 ORD
1142 ORD
1450 OGS
1520 OGS
1557 MSS
1627 MSS
1811 IAD
1846 IAD
2021 OGS
2051 OGS
2128 MSS

Timing for the IAD flights is terrible...totally misses most of the connections in the 1700-1830 bank.

Slightly shorter route! I have my doubts MLB-SRQ is a good route...

I believe Elite is based in MLB so the MLB-SRQ is probably a reposition flight to do the HPN trip that they opened for sales

Thanks as always for this thread.. my favorite

I don't see HPN on their web site yet. Its a nice add for HPN. Maybe MLB-SRQ will work as a sort of tag on also for that route.

I can't figure out their strategy at all. They make Frontier and Allegiant look like master dart throwers in the game of darts.

Well...who would have guessed TVC-SRQ?
I don't see that listed...was it on last week's OAG thread?

They did HPN-SRQ Nov 2017 until end of Apil 2018

Didn't DL recently announce they were dropping SEA-YYC as well? Time for QX to add another flight!

They're dropping SEA-YEG.

AS rejoice! Granted AC wasn't much of a threat for AS, DL is. I would love to see WS enter this market if partnership with DL allows it, they've recently announced PDX.

Disappointing that JAX lost its only international flight. Anybody know what the JAX-YYZ loads/yields were?

YYZ-JAX-YYZ (Dec 2017-Jul 2018)
Month Inbound Outbound
Dec 80% 69%
Jan 79% 72%
Feb 88% 76%
Mar 85% 86%
April 85% 86%
May 81% 89%
June 70% 89%
July 86% 80%

Those loads aren't terrible, but certainly not great either. It looks like they never made it into the 90% range at all.

This was also on a CRJ which would have had rough CASM on a stage length like this. Maybe it’ll come back at least on weekends when the next batch of CR9s arrive to Jazz.

WN could add HOU-NAS nonstop service since (a) WN has much stronger brand recognition in the U.S. than UP does, (b) HOU is one of the main international gateways for WN, (c) WN would have connecting passengers in addition to O&D to support HOU-NAS nonstop service, and (d) NAS is one of the few remaining international destinations already served by WN that isn't currently served nonstop from HOU on WN.

What does the IB BCN-JFK entry mean? Is that the Level flight announced previously as 4 x weekly?

Are the JetSuiteX flights to TRM (Thermal) for Coachella really gone? They're still bookable on their website.

They just extended their schedule recently. Was it not in the extension?

Strangely enough most of the additional frequencies were not in the extension (I think the 4th BOS-CLE may be the only one that got picked up). I think they got added after-the-fact, but have not been reflected in any of the weekly updates.

FA9295 wrote:
What extra frequencies were added at BOS?

Compared to last year, +1 each to AUS (2x), BNA (3x), SAV (2x), CHS (3x), RDU (7x), PHL (8x), DCA (11x), ORD (6x), DTW (4x), and CLE (4x). I may be missing a couple...hard to keep track, but essentially they added 1 frequency to a variety of markets where they compete with DL.

I think it's almost a given that ACK, MVY, and even HYA will see more flights to LGA, HPN, and probably even EWR by summer 2020. These are super popular vacation getaways for many people in the Tristate area with disposable income, and they're willing to pay a whole lot of money to avoid the drive + ferry combination.

I'm wondering if the summer adjustments are indeed as a result of needing more spares, or if this really comes down to seeing softening yields on FLL-RIC (and of course to PAP, where things seem to be getting worse). Of course, with the delays of the 321neo's, I do expect to see closer-in adjustments if B6 hasn't planned accordingly.
