787 Diversion Range?

Sun Mar 03, 2019 2:25 pm

Had a long flight on a TUI 787 on Thursday, TOM493 diverted due to the troubles over Pakistan. We were flying from LKG (Langkawi) to BHX (Birmingham UK). The flight time increased by around 2 hours from 12 to 14 hours as we took a longer 'avoiding' route. I managed to catch the captain after the flight and asked how near the range capacity that was for this flight considering the headwinds on top of the diversion, he said there was possibly another one hours flight available. Thats pretty impressive for a 2 engine bird.

This wasn’t a diversion as you didn’t land at an airport other than your final destination.

You were simply rerouted and deviated from the typical flight plan due to needing to avoid specific airspace.

But yes, the 787 is an incredible machine, but all this information is known.

The 787 has longer flights than this, as does the 777 and A350, both of which are also twins. Impressive? Sure, but not newsworthy.

Suggest mods change topic thread to more accurately reflect what happened in this instance.

It’d be interesting to deviate for that reason, though I understand it happens. Certainly a long time to be stuck in your seat.

I have to imagine this has something to do with the closure of airspace during the tension between Pakistan/India.
That aside, the B787 has proved its range and capabilities for those long and thin routes. Wonderful aircraft :spin:
