Horizon Air (QX) to Reveal Retro Livery on Q400

Sun Mar 03, 2019 4:33 pm

According to employees close to the matter, a Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 (N421QX) will roll out of the paintshop in Victorville, CA, wearing a special retro livery. Speculation among employees points to the “shredded tire” or “meatball” liveries as possible contenders, among others. It is said that the aircraft will be flown to Portland, OR, for a reveal on Monday.

At first I didn't put a lot of stock in this rumor, but after running the tail through flightaware I might believe it. N421QX is scheduled to fly Seattle Yakima on Tuesday as QX2001.

https://flightaware.com/live/flight/N421QX

That happens to be QX's first flight. Little too much of a coincidence.

Well since QX only has had two liveries before current, those choices make sense. But only the red/orange scheme should count. Perhaps have one also in each carrier they boughtout as well. An Air Oregon brown/green would look interesting on a Q400.....

I world love for Alaska to do something with the Costal-Ellis birds. That was a fantastic logo. Whrn QX was operating out of Anchorage, I held out completely unfounded hope, but...

The special livery "pays tribute to our past, but also celebrates our future as we’re creating an airline people love," so it's not simply the old QX livery being applied.

You read my mind, exactly the sunset or meatball logo with the orange stripes & I had a dream with an Air Oregon brown SWM in it.

Horizon Air (QX) to Reveal Retro Livery on Q400

This title is misleading, as it implies the livery will solely be a previous QX livery, and that's not the case. It's a special one, but not any one single one they'd had previously.

While I wait to see a report on exactly what the 'new' Q looks like, I wondered if this particular aircraft previously sported a special livery or was it the standard Q livery?

Also, do we know if most of the school liveries are remaining or will some of those be lost if the aircraft happens to be retired? (Or might they be transferred to other planes not leaving the fleet?)

It's always exciting to see a new livery and I look forward to seeing this one. I'm kinda sad that we currently see no Qs in SAN. Who knows, maybe that will change at some point.

I looked on the database and elsewhere online and apparently the aircraft in question, N421QX, only ever wore the standard black and white Horizon and later Alaska/Horizon liveries (it doesn't appear to have gotten the new blue/green livery).

The weebly site had the SDSU plane going off into retirement a while back. Given that, I suspect that the planes that are leased, anything before 421, will keep the college themes until they retire unless they are cycling through the plane shop. The owned one will probably will be repainted in standard paint or retired as the college paint jobs tie AS a little too much to the PNW and not the new most west coast theme.

According to individuals close to the matter, Horizon Air will be keeping the college liveries. They will, however, be updated to reflect the modern branding and could be placed on other aircraft than their original tails. It is not said whether all college liveries will be kept or just the ones that are most predominant, like UW, OSU, WSU, etc.

I hope the classic Horizon meatball makes an appearance on this bird! Anxious to see what this new livery is going to shape up to be, as it doesn’t appear to be a straight forward retro livery.

I was hoping it would be a Transwestern Airlines of Utah, a Horizon merger from 1983. Very nice though. We need lots more of these retros, commuter airlines too. (Mesa--that's a hint for you).

100% agree. Love the heritage livery but following AA’s lead in title use/placement on a heritage bird was ill-informed.

Damn it, Alaska! The planes said "Horizon" for decades. We can't just let this one plane say "Horizon"? I understand wanting a "seamless product", but the passengers will just board the flight, they don't care if it says "Tajikistan" on it. Much appreciate United keeping "Continental" titles on the 737 retrojet, it would seem that most of the other carriers won't produce a retro with proper titles.

Now that being said, happy to see it.

Thanks to all for the insight into the fate of those special university liveries.

Great pic. I love it. That should honestly be the QX standard livery IMO. It's perfect.

Perhaps next one could have an Air Oregon side and a Transwestern side. That would be one 'unique' look......

I don't mind it saying Alaska on it, but it would have been cool if they put it in the old Horizon font.

They could have also put the current 'Alaska' text in orange, and it might have fit a little better. Don't want to sound like I'm complaining though, since it's cool to see this livery again.

Also of note is the horizon titles appear to be in the pre AS font. Also it says Alaska celebrates horizon not just the standard Alaska horizon wording. Overall it looks like some though went into the livery. Only thing that might have been better is putting the livery on N434MK.

What a great livery, fits the aircraft beautifully.

I wish it featured the original Horizon titles, sticking a modern day logo over a retro colour scheme really takes away from the sentiment and overall effect. I think American are by far the worst for it, their current logo clashes horribly with the colours of most of their heritage jets and even the new British Airways retros feature a big modern day logo and ugly '100' logo, just ruins the illusion in my opinion.

They *did* use the original Horizon logo next to the Alaska titles.

And if we want to get really super nitpicky, this wasn't intended to be a direct recreation of the original QX livery; it's more of an "homage." Aside from the Alaska titles, the cheatline is thinner and there aren't any stripes on the engine nacelles.

It's very well done, though. I dig it.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.
