EK reducing 777F Fleet? Omni new owners?

Tue Mar 05, 2019 9:24 am

There’s a document floating around WhatsApp groups in Dubai suggesting - due an end of lease administrative error by EK - that two 777F’s will return to lessors in Q2 2019.

And that once the issue was established it was too late and that both aircraft have been signed for by Omni.

Anyone truth to this?

Probably is true, as Omni have confirmed they are adding the 77F to their operation.
People are saying. Believe me.

Is it proven to be admin error or an actual end of lease date that EK arranged?

One of EKs 777Fs has been out of service since 25th Jan 2019.

The oldest one in the fleet, A6-EFD, MSN 35606.

EDIT: A6-EFJ (MSN 35610) which is a much newer frame, has been out of service since 10th Feb 2019.

The remaining 12 seem to still be flying according to FR24.

EK have a dedicated set of Freighter pilots paid around 15% less than normal cross qualified pax/freighter line pilots. Part of the reason for the reduction is that it was seen that the freighter pilots were less productive than the pax pilots. e.g. they fly less.
The current EK Arab/slaveship mentality is that it is unacceptable to have pilots not being as productive as possible, hence, one airframe has left the freighter fleet and no more dedicated freighter pilots are being sought.

That theory doesn’t preclude pax pilots from flying cargo, which they do regularly.

Using that logic all they would have to do is fly those two with pax pilots. Seems a stretch to get rid of two aircraft due pilot costs which they could change on a dime.

Assuming, of course, EK has enough pilots to cover their entire 777 (pax and F) fleet. We might be seeing EK sacrificing their freighter fleet to help keep pax fleet staffed.

EK has also been retiring their 2-class 300ERs recently.

What was the error and how much sooner are the aircraft being returned as a result?

Seems like another 777F is out of service now as well.

A6-EFE (MSN 35607).

2 EY 777Fs are currently on secondment to EK SkyCargo, crewed by EY pilots.

EK are doing their level best to end the the current arrangement of having dedicated freighter crews and are actively dissuading any further 777 pilots from going down this road.
As an aside the company has asked 777 pilots if they would be interested in a switch to the 380, particularly captains as the rate of attrition has increased again due to the usual EK self inflicted issues of workload and fatigue v no pay increase. How many will volunteer is currently open for debate as many see the option to move fleets as merely a means for the company to crew the A350/330 which will most likely be taking most of the undesirable back of the clock flying to near Asia and Africa.
As the 777 fleet is reduced, around 7 or 8 A380s have remained out of service post DXB runway closure completion.

Two A380s are out of service and stored in DWC:
A6-EDI since 16APR
A6-EEM since 04JUN

One A380 is located in DWC but is flying DWC MCT up to twice daily: A6-EDB

Three A380s are undergoing scheduled heavy maintenance at DXB:
A6-EDP since 08MAY
A6-EEH since 22APR
A6-EEI since 17MAY

One final aircraft has been repositioned from DWC to DXB and is being prepared for service: A6-EUD

Crew training. They used to do DXB-DXB / DXB-DWC / DWC-DWC for training flights, but after the DXB runway closure, they started doing DXB-MCT.

Not sure why they haven't returned to their normal training route considering DXB is back to 2 runway operations.

EDB must be close to end of lease, so presumably selected for DWC MCT because well below contracted cycles.

how easy (or difficult) is it to be cross-qualified for 777pax and 777freighter operations from pilot perspective?
is it like the 320-family where one could easy fly 4 different types on any given day?
I don't think it's a big deal, but still wondering... ?

Not diffucult at all, infact very common! And quite plesant, Freight containers dont complain like a pax or FA would. A very smooth ride, even if you have to cook your dinner and coffee yourself!
some you lose, others you can´t win!

OT but if you are type rated on a 772, do you only need a differences course for flying 77W/LR? And is three a separate type rating for flying a 777F or is it only a company sop issue?

One type for all. Probably a differences course for the "F" not so sure about the W/LR.

No differences course between any of the pax 777 at EK. 77F is now one day ground school and two sectors under training Capt.

Why would pilots go down this road if the pay is less? Is the work-life balance and rosters better?
First to fly the 787-9
