I know there's an unpainted Max 9 that recently rolled out of the the Renton factory.

Hopefully it will receive the new livery. With the pause in deliveries, they have time
to push thru a change to the paint scheme.

Any word on the live stream- On Twitter, they said it would be on social media, but did not get any more specific than that. Shouldn't it be starting right about now (Noon CST)???

I'd like to see the gold, red, and orange subbed in for the cheatline on the 'rising blue' livery. And I like the original 'meatball' globe design, maybe in shades of blue, or blue and gold. Common colors throughout the years were gold, red, orange, and blue, why not use them all?

Kind of fits the Lufthansa trend....doesn't radically change the branding but reduces everything down to a 2-color scheme.

Certainly not the worst UA livery, which is awarded to the post-gray but pre-merger "shades of blue" mess.

The globe is here to stay, and I welcome this change. We are a global carrier now in a global world, and the globe symbolizes the current ideology. Giving that up would be an absolute mistake.

Finally, that change that needed to happen 10 years ago.

The globe is here to stay, and I welcome this change. We are becoming a true global carrier now in a global world, and the globe symbolizes the current ideology of "Connecting people. Uniting the world". Giving that up would be an absolute mistake. Its time to embrace the change and continue moving the airline in the right direction.

The majority of us have moved on, and those of us hired after 2010 just flat out don't even care about legacy whatever. In another 10 years, nobody will care anymore about what happened during what would be the 20 year mark of the merger. Majority of UA and CO employees will be long gone, and the new generation will take us forward from here on out.

I love the new livery.

United's announcement to employees online:

The next iteration of our livery prominently features the color most connected to our core – blue. Three shades – Rhapsody Blue, United Blue and Sky Blue – are used throughout the design in a way that pays respect to United’s heritage while bringing a more modern energy. We are keeping our iconic globe logo on the aircraft tail, which represents our expansive route network of 355 destinations in nearly 60 countries. Our research has showed us that there’s incredibly strong brand equity in the color blue and in the globe logo — to completely revolutionize would be throwing that equity away. The tail is updated with a gradient in the three shades of blue, while the logo appears predominantly in Sky Blue. The engines and wingtips are also United Blue, and the swoop that customers and employees have expressed fondness for on United’s Dreamliner fleet is Rhapsody Blue. United’s name appears larger on the aircraft body than it did previously, and the lower half of the body is Runway Gray. Near the door of each aircraft is painted our shared purpose: “Connecting people. Uniting the world.”

The new design features core colors from United’s updated brand palette, which was introduced last year as a step toward updating the brand’s visual identity. Blue continues to be the airline’s primary color, with various tones creating more depth and reflecting the colors customers and employees see when they look out the plane window at the sky. The airline’s new color palette also includes shades of purple, which is most recognizable as the color of the new United Premium Plus seats. When combined, the purple and blue tones create a soothing environment and a more relaxed travel experience. In updating its colors, United is reducing the use of gold, which was added to the brand palette almost 30 years ago. United’s new color palette can also be seen in the accent colors of the new uniforms that are being created for more than 70,000 front-line employees.

On average, our aircraft receive new paint jobs every seven years. The first aircraft painted with the new design is a Boeing 737-800, which will be joined by a mix of narrowbody, widebody and regional aircraft with the next livery throughout the year.

I like it. It’s not exciting but I think it looks fresh and smart. I really like the gradient on the tail and the slogan near the nose.
Very pleased they dumped the gold which a I thought was very dated and didn’t fit with any other branding elements they use.

I actually like it. It's simple and elegant. Most companies are moving to that. I kinda wished the grey would've been slightly darker but I like it.

Most companies are moving to logos like these and images. Look at Amazon and how they now stick to 2-3 colors and a plain website. Taking away a lot of the images from the home page.

Kudos to United. I actually feel kinda bad this was leaked and they didn't let them roll it out full of excitement.

P.S - The 737 in the air against the fading sun on the hub website looks really sexy

I think it looks good. A needed brand refresh. As seen in the brand evolution website, I think the globe provides more opportunities for related designs in marketing and in the cabins. I just hope the brand refresh doesn't become too complicated with so many design elements.

This alone is worthy of praise, especially after the Dr Dao fiasco. It's people who make up the airline. It's people who pay to fly on these planes. It's a bold statement to put this on the front of every aircraft. I don't fully love this livery, but this was a great move.

The livery is fine. It's not offensive, doesn't break any design barriers, and will be a good filler for the next decade+ until we get a full on refresh.

Claim you hate it? Wait 2 years and we wont hear a peep from you about it.

I think they did great job! I was not a fan of the post merger globe, and I feel like this is a huge step up. Great integration of the globe and more blue! It defintely feels like it represents what United is now. Well done!

A few points:

I think United keeping the globe was a smart move. But I think the globe is a bit too complicated and doesn't really feel "modern" in that respect. It would've been nice to see an evolution to the globe in the likes of Alaska's softening evolution to their font/tail.

I really, REALLY, dislike the swoop on the aircraft. It is a step backwards from the Dreamliner and MAX swoop. The swoop shape looks identical to the "Canyon Blue" Southwest Airlines livery. Very mid-2000s to me. The swoop on the MAX and Dreamliner is higher and more defined. This was a big miss in my opinion.

The large UNITED font looks better than it did in mockups. It'll be interesting to see how it is adapted fleet-wide.

My only other qualm with this refresh is the winglet. Whenever someone posts a pic on Instagram, Facebook, or wherever from their window - you can easily spot United with the gold line, blue, and silver/white. Going to all blue makes the branding less recognizable on one of the most heavily photographed portions of the aircraft from the consumers' perspective. This is another big miss and becomes too similar to Delta and JetBlue.

At the end of the day, hats off to United for its evolution. Congratulations on the changes and cheers.

Do they really have to retain the uninspiring Continental globe? There's not much you can do with such a block, and it makes the overall look and feel very clunky.

The blue suits Pepsi. Not an FSC airline.

I am personally ambivalent about it. It hasn’t been my airline for a while anyway.

But I think you make a powerful point. The company has stated in the last 3 years alone we have added 20k new employees. Who only know this new company. In another 10 years the vast majority of both customers or employees that had living memories of the Tulip (or to a lesser degree of CO) will be gone.

This is the future, all the folks joining will only know this and that builds with each day.

So I usually don't like new liveries. Some eventually grow on me, some never will (*cough*Lufthansa*cough*). But while I still secretly want the battleship grey back, I must admit that ..... I actually don't hate this one. (Yes, the font is too large and the winglets look a little odd, but it's not bad overall).

I think this would be hard to achieve with a globe. That globe would get distorted by the curvature of the a/c body and would look like it got bloated and needs to fart. I can't wait to see this livery in daylight. I actually like it.

On another note, can B787 engines be painted at all?

They've been using that phrase for years as a PR slogan. It's very NPC and/or Star Trek "Borg" based logic, not bold pretty low energy.

Now that you bring up Dao disaster, I'm surprised most of the management team from incident that still have jobs at Willis who went ahead and made this design.

God Almighty, the P.R. team at UAL needs to be gutted. The photos last night made it seem like the Globe was purple but now it's turquoise looking (better.)

It looks pretty good. The only thing I wish is that the globe was white. When I first saw the picture of the updated livery, I instantly thought that the tail needed white balance correcting. But I guess it will look better in person.

The other thing I like about this slogan is the subtle nod to the merging of two airlines: Connecting people. Uniting the the world.

It does make a couple things clear. First, United decided long ago that they were going to retail the globe logo. They built that into all of their development of the Polaris branding. They've clearly been thinking about this for years now - the color/size of the new livery's tail logo is very similar to the display first shown on the Polaris IFE display when rolled out back in 2016 - an example here: https://onemileatatime.com/united-new-b ... s-polaris/

If United was going to embark on a full rebranding (rather than an evolution) that would've been the time.

Second, now we can see the full vision for all of the little design elements they've pulled from the globe logo; how they use the different shapes and patterns, etc.

This alone is worthy of praise, especially after the Dr Dao fiasco. It's people who make up the airline. It's people who pay to fly on these planes. It's a bold statement to put this on the front of every aircraft. I don't fully love this livery, but this was a great move.

The other thing I like about this slogan is the subtle nod to the merging of two airlines: Connecting people. Uniting the the world.

i didnt even notice that!! good catch! this is a nice way to merge both brands!!

I think it's quite amazing how many different design elements have been pulled out of the globe.

(Airliners.net's policy of keeping omnibus threads like this is really user-unfriendly and really hurts the forums. This thread is a month old and the actual news about UA's livery is buried 20-some pages deep. If there have been new developments in the 737-MAX saga, I'd never know it because that thread has been going on for months and is full of little asides that have nothing to do with the actual point of the thread. Anyway, that's my slightly off-topic rant.)

Someone should tell UA that the flat, simplified, monochromatic look is so five years ago. That said, this is a major improvement over just slapping the word "UNITED" on CO's 90s livery.

Kind of fits the Lufthansa trend....doesn't radically change the branding but reduces everything down to a 2-color scheme.

Certainly not the worst UA livery, which is awarded to the post-gray but pre-merger "shades of blue" mess.

It's funny you say that, I think the Rising Blue livery was their best to date, followed by Friend Ship and Saul Bass.

I just saw photos of the new livery, and I absolutely love it. I never liked the previous one at all because it looked too Continental (it continued using gold for the cheat-line between the belly and upper fuselage and for the globe on the tail). But even though the globe is here to stay, I like how the new livery is somewhat reminiscent of the last pre-merger "rising blue" livery as it uses different shades of blue (dark blue for the tail, wavy stripe cheat-line, and engines; light blue for the globe).

The new livery received some negative reaction, but I honestly don't think it's anywhere near as much as it was when Continental and United merged almost 9 years ago (there was even a Facebook group for people who wanted the combined airline to keep the tulip logo).

The new livery looks great. I would have liked the globe to be modified a bit more with the wider lines but overall a great job UNITED. I look forward to seeing it in person soon.

So now that we've seen the livery, what other branding have we seen that will face UA customers? I'm talking about luggage tags, company stationery, menu covers, safety cards, wall and gate signage, etc. I just looked at their website and there is no obvious change in branding there.

A lot of that branding had already changed over the past few years to remove elements of gold. There's not much that needs obvious changing.

Nah, does nothing for me. The curves of the globe and the fuselage curved blue/grey lines jar with the straight lines of the United font. The blue engines also look like an afterthought.
