Manchester Airport Old House

Fri Mar 08, 2019 6:29 pm

Hi,
While driving around Manchester Airport I noticed a small detached house literally right under a road overpass. Does anyone know why it's still there, or what it's used for?

It should appear on this link for the google maps street view:

The location is on Outwood Lane, just wondering really so any knowledge would be great!

Thanks
:D :D :D :D

It’s called Air House. In the 1970s it used to be the residence of the Airport Director (when the airport was owned by Manchester City Council). In the 1980s it became the offices of the car park department.

Ahh brilliant thanks! So it's not been used as a house for some time then.

No, it hasn't been used as a house for a long time. I started working for Manchester Airport in January 1981 and by then it was being used as offices. The Airport Director at that time was a man called Gordon Sweetapple (what a lovely name!) and I'm pretty sure he had never used it as his residence.

It's a very calm sounding name! That's really good thanks for the help, I just wondered as it seemed to have got lost within the whole airport and really stuck out to me - with its location too! do you know if it was originally part of a street of houses or just built separately?

As far as I recall, it was built specifically as the Airport Director's residence.
