FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

You have to wonder how much longer AA can hang on to the hublet at JFK.

JFK BOS dropping down to .8 for June. Geez

AA adding a 2nd daily flight on PHL-PNS....I’d like to say it’s because the route is doing so well, but suspect F9 launching PNS-PHL in May has something to do with it.

Thanks as always for doing these reports!

Always look forward to your Sunday post. I know it takes a lot of effort to collect this data. I see delta going almost 2X daily on PHL-SLC route which I assume is because AA quietly ended there seasonal route as I can’t find any bookings for non stop on AA website. Good for Delta

If you notice the plan is obvious. They are increasing beyond perimeter (LGA) JFK flying and reducing the short routes.

Jeesh YUL is down to 1x daily. I remember that being as high as 4-5x daily. AA is really on slash at JFK.

Still my favorite terminal at JFK and their frequency to LA is excellent.

It's to feed the overseas JFK flights to Europe and LatAm

AA has been vocal that the Europe connections would be focused out of PHL. LATAM connections have always been via MIA.

Another big hit for Detroit losing GRU. At this point anything Delta adds at Detroit is pretty much meaningless are far as growth goes because every add gets washed away by an equal cancelation or reduction in service.

Except they are showing reductions in beyond the LGA perimeter flying in this change, showing reductions to LAS, SAN and SEA

DTW-GRU is less than 200 miles shorter than DTW-ATL-GRU. Most DTW-based passengers will fly this connection and most passengers who were connecting XXX-GRU-DTW will now connect XXX-ATL-GRU. This will only cost DL a few pax at most. And it helps keep profit in ATL and helps ATL stay competitive in the race to the annual most flights/most passengers title. Eliminating a long haul flight while losing only a few pax and boosting ATL is a win/win move.

I don’t understand the logic of AA cutting FLL -ORD since people can connect in ORD just as easily as CLT or PHl.

Thanks as always for your thread!

Didn’t show up on your thread as no frequency change, but with AA schedule update last night TYS-DFW gained a mainline flight starting in June on an A319. First AA mainline in TYS since shortly after 9/11. I figured it was about due as AA will be operating 26 daily weekday departures from TYS this summer. Prior to this addition, it had to be one of the larger stations without any mainline service.

Blame Ford, FCA and GM for shrinking their Brazilian operations. You can't fly (profitably) without demand. As for lack of Delta love for DTW, let's turn back the block 12 years to the NW era. How many flights - from all hubs - did NW have to South America? Not a single one.

If you do some dummy bookings, you'll see that AA commands higher fares for a one stop to LGA vs a nonstop to JFK. They're chasing the $

When living in Porto Alegre, I was sad AA dropped flights from POA-MIA. Now, seeing GRU-DTW cut, is this about the Brazilian economy still?

Seems like a fairly substantial AA trimming of frequencies at PHL pretty close in (June). Is there a logistical issue, upgauging, or lower than expected bookings/capacity trim?

No, G3, AD and O6 have inundated the market with capacity. DL’s weakest link is now understandably being cut. Their focus has also shifted to investing long-term in the development of JFK-GIG.

I thought so too. But IMO the AA route was a early morning departure at like 6:30am so probably hard to gain connections that way. But overall good Delta taking advantage of a dropped out just like LH on Frankfurt

I nonrev on this route fairly regularly and I have yet to not have to sit in the cockpit jump seat (every pax seat full). I imagine AAs add is a bit of both the routes success and F9 jumping on the route.

I would say that FAT-LAX on AA is the biggest loss here, as it means the last flight will depart at 3:56 and arrive at 5:17, more than 3 hours earlier than right now. While PHX has red-eye connections too, this means anyone taking a red eye from LAX (including TPAC) will have a significantly longer wait. DEN seems strange: no more mid-day flight? Did this just open a hole up for something else?

July schedule is a placeholder, at this point anything could be cut(except the hub flying)

In the context of this thread, I don’t follow you.

Damn, I wrote that this morning, my phone's autocorrect doesn't recognize airport codes. It was supposed to be CLT, it corrected to a recent search from my phone. Apologies.

Ah totally understood. This pretty much reversed last week’s addition.

I believe JFK might be doing runway work in June, perhaps that’s why AA cut some frequencies, it’s odd that the BOS and SAN flights come back in July.

Blame Ford, FCA and GM for shrinking their Brazilian operations. You can't fly (profitably) without demand. As for lack of Delta love for DTW, let's turn back the block 12 years to the NW era. How many flights - from all hubs - did NW have to South America? Not a single one.

You can't be throwing facts at him, he can't take it. It's the big evil Delta thay's just has it out for DTW.

I recall that DTW-GRU was launched during the recession for the big 3 automakers and other corporate contracts. Perhaps a few dropped since then and affect yield on the route.

AA has a hub at MIA, and AA already has 8 daily nonstops to MIA from ORD. AA also has nonstop service to MIA but not to FLL from its LAX and PHX hubs.

AA's JFK regional operation's day looks to be numbered. Also, this is just the usual tweaking AA does to finalize schedule. Anything later is still up in the air.

Understood but most people that live in Broward and Palm Beach County don’t want to go to MIA.

Look at July.

Looks like from June 6 - July 6, AA operates a single BOS-JFK flight on Wednesdays and Thursdays only.

Back to 5/day starting July 7th... weird. Could this be another impending route cancelation, similar to JFK-MCO a few weeks back?

July schedule is a placeholder, at this point anything could be cut(except the hub flying)

I’m more confused why they are choosing to fly Wednesday/Thursday only for June. Might as well not fly it at all. And even if you were only to fly it two days, why Wednesday?

Poor DTW. Just 500ish flights a day by a single airline. How dare they?
I have been on this site 15 years. A unrecoverable email account led me to starting over. Those of you who call me a rookie, you may stop ok?

Thanks as always for this report. The responsible trimming by AA at JFK is similar to what we have seen other airlines do. AA is just feeling some of the same pressure in JFK that Delta felt at DFW. Instead of picking battles, they are picking profits. The horror!! Let's face it, no one airline can be all things to all people in all locations.

Those of us out here in "Spokelandia" deal with connections and high prices almost every trip. We don't get flights to every hub with each carrier. Often, our direction of travel may determine the airline choice unless we really just want to be loyal to one carrier and eat the extra time. However, our lives are happy and productive.

Those jobs coming back to America or is this as a result of modifying their product line?

Considering how Brazil is not a big car/truck importer due to how the market is organised, the production takes place mostly within the country. The fact that they are reducing their presence is a capitulation.

Delta’s move makes all the sense. American automakers are losing their importance in Brazil. If Peugeot launches Opel in Brazil, then GM could also start saying goodbye, considering how the Chevrolet cars that used to be sold in Brazil were all derived from European models.

AA's continued FLL cuts either mean FF members have to drive to Miami or will just seek other options. If someone in southern Palm Beach or northern Broward isn't an AA frequent flier, they can fly UA to ORD and not shed a tear. But I believe AA's FF base is large enough that they might be making a mistake cutting FLL to a bare bone spoke as has happened since the merger.
