Well, the latest METAR is winds 45 gusting 64 with moderate blowing snow and 500 feet of vertical visibility so yeah, between wind and the snow, it's probably not realistic to do much there right now.

Yeah, DEN operations are done for the day. The latest weather report at 11:00am MDT had heavy snow, 0.15mi visibility, 400 foot ceilings, and winds 55mph sustained with gusts to 75mph.

The only aircraft in the air bound for DEN at the moment are BA and the 2 LH flights. I'll be dollars to doughnuts they divert to ORD later. One of the DAL-DEN-SJC flights for Southwest is currently overflying DEN going straight to SJC.

Looking out my office window right now, it's definitely a winter wonderland out there.

Temp has dropped here (West of COS) from 39 to 29, snow is heavy and coming in sideways with the wind. Power is flickering. Luckily the liquor store was open. It went from rain to snow very quickly, and the roads are slippery as all hell right now.

UA and Southwest are done for the day. Frontier still has flights up for after 8pm. Southwest has already Xcld some AM flights for tomorrow, UA will depend on how much staff makes it in.

They departed after I made my post above. My guess is they will eventually go to MSP as conditions at DEN are not forecasted to have improved around their scheduled arrival time.

The local media reported around 1:30pm MDT that all six runways at DEN are closed to traffic according to airport officials. The road to/from the airport (Pena Blvd) is also currently closed. Light rail service between downtown Denver and the airport is still running, though significant delays are to be expected.

I live in Colorado Springs and tried to get to work at DEN but had to turn around and go back home. I left before 11am, and just now got back home at 2pm. I made it about 15 miles or so.

LH480 MUC-DEN is now diverting to ORD. I expect BA219 LHR-DEN and LH447 FRA-DEN to follow. All runways at DEN are still closed.

Various parts of I-25 between Denver and Colorado Springs have been closed since the snow started. There was a multi-vehicle pile up earlier today just north of Monument Hill.

I'm quite aware of that. Most people in Denver and everyone outside of Colorado don't know/don't care about the distinction, so it's easier to refer to RTD's entire rail system as "light rail".

We attempted highway 83, however the visibility was literally 0 (couldn’t see the hood of the truck) so we were forced to turn around. Unfortunately we left before UA issued an “adverse weather day” calling for us to not report. We got that notification after we turned around.

BA219 doesn’t seem to be diverting to ORD per Flightradar24.

Oops I just saw the post saying it’s going to LAS

LH446 has made a hard left turn over northern Ontario but has not filed its diversion airport as far as I can tell. Just based on heading, it looks like it may be going to somewhere on the east coast, not ORD.

Copa 476 PTY-DEN is in the air with an estimated arrival time around 8:00pm MDT. I wonder if the folks at DEN told them they expect to have a runway open by then.

LH446 is definitely no longer headed to DEN. There is no updated flight plan filed yet, but it may be going to DTW as this flight has diverted there in the past.

FI671 still has yet to divert, but I am sure it will.

Also, it's looking like we will have two BA flights tomorrow to make up for today. Will this be the case with the LH and FI flights too?

CM476 has turned around and is going back to PTY.

Gate space may be an issue at ORD since LH went to DTW and BA went to LAS.

FI to DEN usually goes to MSP when they have to divert. That's my bet.

In the past when LH has diverted, the aircraft is ferried back to Germany without passengers. Affected passengers are accommodated on other flights.

Makes sense. I would think it would be fairly easy to accommodate LH passengers to and from DEN given all of the UA flights. BA, not as much obviously.

It is indeed terrible outside. Started at 0900/MT. Never seen winds gusts this hard. Most roads are closed. Airlines were very smart to pre-cancel flights. The A Train also is no longer operating to the airport and Pena Blvd is closed. Be safe out there!

Can confirm - it’s nasty out here!
Snowing non stop, high winds, low visibility. Everything shutting down.

I am glad this happened midweek rather than the weekend - with spring breaks all of March we have a lot of folks traveling through Denver for ski vacations.

My part of town didn’t get too much snow, but the wind was pretty brutal at times.

Must be, as ORD makes more sense than DTW given the UA hub. With respect to BA, I’m surprised they didn’t select PHX since it’s also a partner hub, though I guess the fact they already to fly to LAS was probably part of the calculus.

As far as quality of life goes, March is possibly the worst time to live in Denver. All you want is for spring to come, but these big, wet snowstorms can come at any moment and then turn into a slushy mess.

Colorado weather is really much nicer than most people think for most of the time, but I do not miss living in those spring snowstorms.

My mom was flying OKC-DFW-COS today to come visit me and they cancelled her DFW-COS flight as she was boarding in OKC so she was able to get off the plane. Couldn't get rebooked to DEN or COS until Saturday. Luckily they refunded her whole ticket. She called me while she was trying to get rebooked and asked me if I knew anything about Skywest 1378 which had an OKC-COS flight plan filed. Apparently another person had seen that flight on Flightaware and was trying to get the AA agent to rebook him on it. Had to explain that was a maintenance ferry flight and nobody would be getting booked on it!

I live on the southwest side of COS and it wasn't near as bad as the north side of town. They did say the airport had sustained 90+ MPH winds for a ten minute period. Crazy!!!

:rotfl:

This had me cracking up, thank you for that! Living here really is quite nice, even with the crazy springtime weather. Just ask any Coloradan about March 2003, now that was a blizzard! There are some photos on here from that blizzard with piles of snow next to planes at DEN, good times!

Hopefully we will see it all return to normal quickly. I don't know how much snow DIA got, but in Denver the accumulation wasn't all that much. I would say things will be normal again very quickly!

Operations slowly resuming this morning. F964, to CLE, and F9278, to STL, were the first flights to depart DEN since 10:45am MDT yesterday, and operations are expected to slowly pick up through the morning and afternoon today.

I mean, that's sort of me (except I mine Dinosaurs). 15 inches of wind driven snow here, nice and packed and very cold. The worst part is most stores are supplied from distribution centers out of Denver and 25 has been closed for a whole day now. Just had our first Fedex flight in from Memphis, but I imagine some of our less prepared neighbors (and there are a lot of them here) will start to run out of a few things at home pretty quick.

I don't even have to try to make it to work till noon-ish.

I measured 8" at my place in Northfield/Stapleton. The side roads are awful still but the Interstates are fine. DIA should be back to normal (4 of 6 runways open) by Noon/Local.

I drive a snowplow for E-470, where the mindset is keep the road open at all costs. Yesterday we were stopping on the highway at times because we simply couldn’t see where the edges of the road were. Glad airlines played it safe and didn’t get a whole bunch of people stranded at the airport.

I saw several snow plows spun out on Hwy 83 north of Colorado Springs.

105, I-25, and 83 are still shut down between the springs and Denver. So I’m still unable to get to work at DIA. No word on when highways will open.

Several westbound flights have left DEN this morning. Appears the airport will slowly begin ramping back up. Flights to secondary markets will likely be the last to be activated.

I've seen it snow in Denver in July,; I've seen it over 70 in February. The only thing predictable about weather in Denver is that it is unpredictable.

When Mother Nature decides to do as she wishes, humanity needs to stand back and exercise patience.

When she is through, however, Coloradans will get it cleared as fast as they can and go on with life. DEN will get back to normal as quick as it can, but things take time.

I'm grateful at least the loss of my mother's sister happened last month when mom could fly BFL-DEN-XNA-DEN-BFL without any issues. She got stuck at DFW for more than a day a few years ago during that dumping of an ocean onto north Texas and finally got driven to Arkansas.
