DL's 777 Going To American Airlines

Mon Aug 30, 1999 1:56 am

I spoke with an American Airlines crew member yesterday at ORD and he told me that there was a last minute decision by Delta to transfer all the 777's in Delta's fleet to American. In return, Delta will get Reno Air's MD-80's and MD-90's.

I haven't been able to get any more details on this. Does anybody else know more about this deal in the works (which the AA crew member said was pretty firm)?

I thought AA needed QQ's MD-80's for their San Jose operation...

My question is why would AA want the DL 777s. If their still being built they can change them to 3 class, but if they're already built, they're in 2 class service which would cost AA a heap of money. Also, the entire interior would have to be changed and DL's interior doesn't even remotely correspond with AA's (it's a lot uglier!). This statement and my s/n may seem like I have a biased opinion but I'm just stating the facts.

It's not hard or time consuming to change a 777's seating configuration. That was one of the big selling points of the 777...they were able to change --everything-- and I mean everything around in a matter of hours (vs days with other aircraft). The only problem I could see would be the different electronics and systems that differ from AA to DL.

OK. I checked on speednews and Delta has put the 2 777s they have and 5 more to be delivered for sale/lease. For those interested, Air China has 3 for sale.

What about engines..I thought DL and AA had different engines on their 777's..Would be costly to keep parts inventory for so few airplanes with different engines..

Both AA and DL use the RR Trent, but I don't know about detail differences between their respective units.

Correct me if I am wrong, but does Reno not own the aircraft. Are they all not leased? I know American ordered a couple of 737 to replace planes coiming off from leases. Yes/no?

It looks like Delta will keep the MD-11's longer than American will. They are retirering the L-1011's and now they don't want to keep the B777's anymore. Delta doesn't seem to be happy with the B777 (there has been a pilot salary dispute I believe). So what widebodies are they going to be left with: the B767 (all variants, they are the only ones with Continental that have ordered the 767-400) and the MD-11.
