Does IAH allow STOL ops from taxiways?

Sat Mar 16, 2019 1:17 am

I was reading an article on Texas monthly and was surprised to read that apparently IAH allows STOL ops for regional aircraft from taxiways. It would definitely be surprising if true. Can anyone confirm this?

The article is from 1975.
I’m sure that regulations were a bit looser back then.

This was not very uncommon back in the 70s and 80s. I believe Dash 7s at airports like PHL and JFK performed these activities. Even the early use of RNAV was done at these airports. As there are no longer any STOL passenger flights operating at major U.S. airports anymore, I am sure the practice has been removed from airport operations.

I remember DFW had a STOL runway at one time, not sure if it was on a taxiway or just designated as part of a runway

Yes I remember that as well. Pretty sure inboard parallel taxiway on west airfield.

No taxiway landings at IAH these days.

Champaign, IL (CMI) used to use taxiways as uni-directional runways during the flight school pushes.

A few days ago, I was working on KPIE on my FS2004 ADE scenery. I noticed today KPIE already removed runway STOL now becomes a full taxiway no longer use STOL runway along RWY 17/35.

Rules were not relaxed back then.

There was a STOL runway parallel to 15. It was were WA is. There was a 3000 foot runway outlined on it and it was called the STOL runway. I used it all the time in my C172. All you had to say was to “request the STOL runway”.

Why, well back then a little airline called METRO operated Twin Otters to a bunch of little airports around Houston. They flew to Hobby, Clearlake, Beaumont, Galveston and so on. It was a way to keep the slow traffic clear of the other runways. GREAT IDEA TOO. Now days with the hyper busy airports and multiple runways, it’s not necessary and adds more of a hazard.

Cheers from Houston.

Obviously not a recent addition of Texasmonthly as the article was published 528 months ago :-)

Anyway besides the sarcasm I think that others have clearly mentioned why the practice is not used anymore.

They should bring this back. It would open up more slots at congested airports.

Good luck getting Americans to fly around in Twin Otters. There’s only a couple of US slot restricted airports.

Yanks fly them all the time around the Grand Canyon, besides aren't they called Vikings now? When I wrote my original tongue-in-cheek comment, I had Heathrow in mind. The idea is a lot better than circular runways.

You might consider the following runways as "STOL-esque":

KPHL 08/26
KBOS 14/32, 15L/33R
KSLC 14/32
KLGB 16L/34R

Just to name a few.

It is the present day G taxiway between WK and G11. If you're taxiing on G today, you can still see where they scoured the pavement to remove the STOL markings on the taxiway. Though G taxiway was closed for a time to put in the apron for the future F terminal, so the original STOL pavement might be gone if they rebuilt the taxiway with new pavement like they did L taxiway on the east side.

I got $20 says AA takes their 787's with GE powerplants. Just a hunch. Any takers?
