Updated: British Airways release new ClubWorld seat

Sat Mar 16, 2019 12:09 pm

Looks like it takes inspiration from the current First on the 787s, looking forward to seeing the configuration, which should definitely be direct aisle access and definitely not 2-4-2!

Will the 744 fleet get the new Club World seat ? or only the new planes.

Let's be realistic, will it actually make a difference and bring them up to the level of most European carriers or Delta?

Probably not.

Pretty sure they're not, as they're supposed to be retired by 2024. The A350s being delivered later this year will have them, and a few 777s should get the new seat retro-fitted by the end of the year!

The CW soft product is now excellent and an all aisle access seat with storage will make for a very competitive competition. Personally, I prefer VS for US flights as their ground experience is superior.

It will likely be the same business seat Qatar uses on the 787 and A380, potentially with a door.

It will wipe the floor with the 767/A330 delta one and give the new Delta one suite a run for its money.

I already would fly Club World over D1, on average (some incidents I would take D1, most I would take CW). Realistically this should bring them well above the average carrier.

I'm sure you love to bash BA, but there new soft product is very good, and arguably one of the best in Europe and the competitors in Europe are not exactly amazing. Air France still is mostly angle flat 2-2-2, KLM is mostly 2-2-2. Lufthansa is ALL 2-2-2 or 2-3-2. Delta soft product is not that good either.

It should be one of the best ways for TATL Business if they can have a good hard product to go with the new DO&CO food and new bedding.

I agree on the VS staff plus their soft product, but their seat sucks. No storage (that little table for your drink is a joke) and the seat is just not up to date. I mean you can’t recline using a button. Plus you need to get up to make it a bed. VS needs to change their seat.

Is it going to face backwards?

Can be the nicest seat in the world but I don’t want to sit backwards or stare at someone’s face for 8 hours. If rear facing seating was the way of the future more airlines than just AA and BA would be doing it.

Like EY and QR? The latter being arguably the best J product out there today.

It might not be common but it is very effective when implemented properly (ie not like AA!).

For me the seat is only one part of the BA problem. Yes it’s now out of date, but a brand new state of the art seat won’t improve the inconsistent on board experience with mediocre food & wines. It’s all part of a whole product. Their partner AA is better at it and arguably so too are VS, DL, AC & UA

This is certainly an exciting development! I've flown both AA and BA J across the pond on more than one occasion, and I have to echo the estimation that AA's offering is both more private and comfortable (except on the upper deck of a BA 744- nothing beats that!!!). In as far as soft product is concerned, they're relatively equal, especially as AA has done a good bit to raise its game in recent years, although the ground experience at Heathrow is naturally much better with BA. Also, BA's FAs seem a bit friendlier, on average. With that said, however, I don't know why folks are still so upset about CW. I understand the gripe about those middle seats, but all things considered, it's certainly not a bad product, and it beats Y any day of the week.

Excited to see what they come up with!! Perhaps waiting a bit longer will bring something competition beating?

Will the new uniforms be launched at the same time? Freshen up the brand in its entirety.

We shall see shortly.
I only turn left when boarding aircraft. Well, mostly. All right, sometimes. OH OKAY - rarely.

Having just flown on the Air Belgium A340 in business I must admit I’d be cautious about ever complaining again about BAs current Club World seat. There’s a lot to be said for not having to shove your size 10s into a box and having literally no shoulder room between fixed arm rests when flat.

The current seat has many faults but it also has many benefits, especially for those of us over 6ft tall!

Having said that, Iv just recently flown Cathays A350 in business from DUB to MEL return and that’s just spoiled me for life!

Regarding the catering, BA recently revealed that all longhaul catering ex LHR will eventually be provided by Do&Co with the first few routes already swapping over. Anyone who has flown BA to JFK over the last 4 or so years may already be familiar with the far better catering that they provide and I can certainly confirm it is much superior to the Gate Gourmless offerings. Now all cabins will receive an upgrade food wise.

AF is transitioning to 1-2-1 currently 787, and some 777 have it already. KLM 787 also have 1-2-1, their 747,777, and A330 have 1-2-1/2-2-2. Also LH is all 2-2-2, not 2-3-2. I think LH and KLM are the best out the European carriers.

And when the 747’s are gone, BA will no doubt also have a 1-2-1 configuration across the fleet.

As mentioned, the soft product is very good now and was obviously ramped up in advance of this new seat arriving. Now all they need to sort is the Business lounges - that is something that they don’t have a one up on competitors with.

You are incorrect on all statements (apart from your opinion KL and LH are the best which is of course something you are allowed, although I disagree.)

AF is 1-2-1 on 787s and some 777s but they are not retrofitting any. The A330 retrofit is maintaining 2-2-2.
KLM ONLY have 1-2-1 on 787. ALL A330/B747/B777 are the 2-2-2 configuration. No plans to retrofit at all.
LH does indeed have 2-3-2 on the 747-400 and they are 2-2-2 on ALL others with no retrofit plans.

BA doesn't have a good hard product currently and certainly worse than the 1-2-1 KLM/AF offering but I would argue far better than Lufthansa. They new seat will be direct aisle access and to combine the excellent soft product on BA with food and bedding especially and definitely better in terms of soft product to the dismal offerings by the USA based carriers. It will be a winner.

I maintain than the new BA seat, combined with the best (in my opinion) soft product across the Atlantic, BA should be the best TATL offering when there fleet becomes all the new seats. 747s going. 777s are first to recieve retrofits and new 787s/A350s and 777Xs coming with new seats.

BA’s in-flight catering has definitely improved, but it’s still not great. It still falls short of CX, QR and QF for example.

For example, on a BA flight last week I was served ‘roasted haddock with herbed mashed potato, glazed carrots and broccoli’ Sounds okay, if a little homely. The problem was the fish was drier than the Sahara and the whole dish desperately called out for some sort of sauce. I might not really have noticed its poor quality had I not just connected from a Qantas flight where I had enjoyed ‘Seared Humpty Doo barramundi with Pan-fried polenta, broccoli and almond romesco’ which was rich and buttery and the moist fish flaked beautifully. Needless to say, it was all perfectly cooked. The Qantas dish was also far more inventive in its ingredients and presentation than the BA counterpart.

The quality of the wines offered on board BA is, frankly, embarrassing. On the same flight I was offered a low-range Pouilly-Fumé - Domaine de Fontenille 2917. Vivino rates this wine a 3.8 and it retails at around the £10 mark. The white alternative was Reata Chardonnay from Sonoma. Again, a low-tier wine that retails for about £12. They are not bottom-barrel wines, no - BA save that for the plastic-bottled dishwater they hand out to the poor souls in Economy - but when BA’s competitors are offering wines that retail around the £25-30 mark, BA have a problem.
I only turn left when boarding aircraft. Well, mostly. All right, sometimes. OH OKAY - rarely.

So confirmed that they are going from 8 to 4 abreast, they will be taking quite a drop in revenue for the same space, or will they increase seat price?
The pictures make it look quite nice lets hope the soft product steps up to make it a nice trip.

Wow, proper storage in business class. Groundbreaking.

For real though, I think this looks pretty phenomenal. This might be the beginning of the end for F at BA?

Impressive- love it. However what will happen to first now? Is there a refit coming for that too?

Apparently. The 777’s are being refitted with this + a new F in around November time so i expect we’ll see it announced in the coming months.

The article mentions that the B787-10 will have an updated F with 8 seats, so F will still be offered for those who simply cannot travel in anything less than that...

Looking forward to see the A350-1000 in BA livery - sounds like they are investing a lot in this aircraft, and with 331 seats it will be one of their highest capacity birds too.

AA's super diamond seats are amazing, so I'm really looking forward to these. The door for your seat is amazing. What a massive improvement from club world

It looks like a slightly more dense version of their F product, so it's the beginning of the end for First Class on BA, unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your perspective.
If you can walk away from it intact, it was a good landing!
