Delay or Recall of MD80 Retired Ships due to B737Max Grounding

Sun Mar 17, 2019 8:11 am

At the very least AA and Delta must be weighing the options on doing a D check on some of the birds,
Since that is the main reason for their scheduled retirement (the pricey D check)

Although they are gas guzzlers the MD80 are not hampered by 100$ per barrel of oil. (the avg price seems to hover around 50$)
as to the capacity, well the MAX has more capacity, But not that much more.

If they are worried by the age of the AC, what can be done is to take 1 of 5 MD80 planes that are recently retired and
take them apart down to the last rivet, to see if Douglas planes are as tough and reliable as legend says.

Obviously a 2-3 month grounding will not cause this UNRETIREMENT.
But what if foreign governments demand that structural changes be implemented on the 737MAX that
rebalance the trim without software. (Using say ballast in the front for example) Or they wont approve them in their airspace
That would take time to implement and Boeing would have to recertify the 737max. If all of this takes more than 18 months then Delta
and American can pull the trigger and implement MD80 redux.

Delta does not operate the Max, so I'm not understanding why you are mentioning them.
