Pan Am 747 in 1977

Sun Mar 17, 2019 8:10 pm

My first flight ever was on a Pan Am 747 in March 1977 from FRA to JFK. I'm going to look for a model of one from that time period. I have no way of finding out the tail number or flight number. My question is what would the livery looked like then? Was it the small letters or did they have the larger billboard letters too? Just curious.

Thanks, Jason

The billboard scheme was unveiled in 1984.

Yes, with the first deliveries of the then new A300 and A310. It first started on the A300 and A310 and then it was applied to the previously existing fleet of 727s and 747s. I'm sure that by now the livery would have changed again, if Pan Am was still in business.

In 1977, most likely, it was a 100 Series that you flew on from FRA to JFK. I believe however that Pan Am had a few 200 Series, and SPs yes that I know, but most of their 747 fleet, other than the SPs, consisted of 100 Series aircraft.
