IAH - Rwy 9 for Landings?
Gang, was just on flightaware checking out comings and goings at IAH and it appears that they are using runway 9 for landings??? I never knew they did that. I thought only the 8s when wind was east. It appears this way on flightaware cause they have three corridors of planes landing to the east and I can tell two are for the 8s so I assume the other is for 9. And if this is true, does that mean that takeoffs can;t be using the 15s, cause if a plane is landing on 9, doesnt that basically take it directly over the 15s.

They can stagger takeoff's on 15 to avoid aircraft landing on 9, if they are indeed landing 9. Think of it as having intersecting runways.

Total speculation on my part but yesterday one of the chemical plants in east Houston caught fire and there has been a massive cloud of thick black smoke over Houston ever since. I don't know if it's related but it's possible that they're using a different flow than they normally would to avoid the toxic cloud.

15L has been opening and closing lately. 15L is notamed closed until March 31 but I was on a flight last Saturday that departed 15L. On Thursday 27 was being used for departures of which I have not seen in a long time. At any rate seems as though the normal traffic patterns are disrupted for the time being.

RWY 27 departures are pretty rare, usually after a cold front. As for 9 arrivals its more common than 27 departures but still not typical.

Happens as much as departures and arrivals on the 33's.

Ive seen landings on the 9s before. Theres even some photos in the a.net database of planes flying over the FX ramp to land on 9. The last time I saw one was ~2011, it was actually a WN diversion from HOU. I had to do a triple take!
And for the poster who mentioned take offs on the 33s, they are fairly common in the winter. I actually experienced it flying IAH-CDG on a CO 764 in 2009.
Takeoffs on the 26s happen as well although its not un-rare, but doesn't happen everyday.
And landings on the 15 arent a common sight neither but I've seen it. There's also landing gear marks on the runways to prove it.
I have never seen landings on the 33s though, that's usually 9/27 and the 8/26s.

I'm glad you said that because the previous poster mentioned arrivals and departures on the 33's. I can't remember seeing an arrival on the 33's in 25+ years.

LOL that is a really long and brutal taxi. Especially when arriving on a long haul flight. Similar to landing on 34R at NRT and taxiing to the Skyteam gates at Terminal 1.

9 is an offload runway on east flow when the arrivals are heavy. Affects departures off the 15s so it's usually done on the backside of the departure push..
Been used very often the last 2 months with 15L closed. Dept 27, land 26L/R is the preferred flow with strong N/NW winds when 33R/L would normally be used.
Not related at all.
On a west flow when departing 15L/R, northbound aircraft departing 26L IS an everyday thing, especially right now with 15L closed.

Yes, when the 9 arrival is inside a certain point, the Takeoff Hold Lights activate on the 15s and effectively shut them down until the arrival is past.
