Swoop cancels YEG-OAK before launch

Mon Mar 18, 2019 7:15 pm

Swoop has removed OAK from its website. Was to be served three times per week from YEG starting May 26.

Air Canada currently serves YEG-SFO daily.

OAK has really taken it on the chin in terms of int'l ops, lately. :(

They would have gotten preclearance in YEG, so they can't even use "lack on int'l space" as an excuse.

OAK can't even support YVR, let alone YEG. It's not surprising.

Wonder if any of this is MAX related? Need the lift elsewhere, poor pre bookings.

Is it permanent or temporary?

Swoop doesn’t operate Max aircraft.

YEG-OAK was a head scratcher from the get go. Someone was staring at dots on a map a little too long. Perhaps from YXX, but not YEG.

Swoop added YLW-LAS for the summer months on a Thursday / Sunday rotation.

That sad it couldn't even get started. I was hoping for at least one season of $119 CAD fares before they figured out it wouldn't work.

Understood. Was wondering if swoop lift was being used to fill void at mainline due grounding.

Yeah, that’s bad news. However, OAK is very well placed to serve the S.F. market. The issue is that there is still a lack of awareness as to where OAK is located, even for U.S. residents, let alone internationally. Let OAK make a move to incorporate S.F. into its name and watch the result. I would bet that changes the landscape dramatically. Not that it will happen but, if it did, it’s a different ballgame. I’ve heard SFO has stated it is likely to be out of airfield capacity by around 2025. That’s just six years away. Then what?? OAK (and SJC, for that matter) will play an even bigger role in serving the Bay Area than it does today. Though not a positive move, Swoop reversing course on seasonal YEG-OAK service won’t change the general course of growing demand in the Bay Area, and OAK will benefit greatly.

So this explains today's announcement of twice weekly YLW-LAS. All the Swoops birds are -800s.

While SWOOP is an all -800 operation, their parent, WESTJET does have the MAX. Perhaps SWOOP flights being pulled so those -800's can stay with WS and cover the MAX planes??

I think Swoop should launch YXX-OAK instead, the market is bigger compared to YEG-OAK. BLI has daily flights to OAK and I would assume a lot from Vancouver use that flight cause Bellingham is too small of a city to support a daily route to OAK. Swoop can take this advantage and take away pax from BLI where people will use YXX instead.
