Could AA cancel their 737 MAX orders?

Thu Mar 21, 2019 7:17 pm

With the grounding of the 737 MAX, is there a possibility that AA might cancel their 737 MAX orders and order the A320neo and/or more A321neos? Doug Parker has a past Airbus background from US Airways.

Always possible. Extremely unlikely.

Anything is possible at this point. He'd have to wait a while in line. It would also be sort of poetic... AA's demand for a counter option against the NEO > Boeing offered MAX > MAX is rushed out the barn > MAX kills people > AA cancels MAX order > AA orders NEO.

I wonder though even if AA doesn't cancel their current MAX orders, what impact could the grounding have on their future narrowbody orders?

Also, the MAX was a request of pre-merger AA.

AA has already deferred some Max deliveries.

New schedule for deferred 737 MAX orders

Another aspect of the deal that AA and Boeing probably wanted to bury: the airline deferred the delivery of 40 Boeing 737 MAX. That’s two years worth of deliveries based on AA’s fleet schedule of taking 20 per year from 2019-2022. Now, we have more details. The 40 deferred orders are from 2020 to 2022, and will be moved to 2025 to 2026. Unfortunately for AA flyers, the airline still plans to end 2018 with 20 and 2019 with 40 of these aircraft with very tight legroom.

Since AA is a current NEO customer, I could see Airbus finding delivery slots for them
if they decided to order more 321NEO's and cut their Max order from 100 down to say 50.

I've also wondered if AS might decide to cancel the Max9's they have on order and
more 321NEO's. Not sure when AS is supposed to take delivery of their Max'9's

Don’t forget....Airbus has some open delivery slots thanks to the cancellations announced at the beginning of March....to keep in AAs good books, I’m sure Airbus would walk on water.

The actual change was to defer about 50% of the planned MAXs from 2020-2022. There are planned to be 40 by end of 2019 and then 50 in 2020 and 60 in 2021 instead of the 65 & 80 originally planned. That being said, the 321NEO is also facing delivery delays which is going to delay those planned ramp-ups as well.

Yes, but only if Airbus delivers the aircraft with the party LED lighting set to level 11.

Could they? Of Course. Airbus will be quite accommodating. Will they? Probably not. Boeing will do what they need to do in order to keep the orders. They might get a price cut, or some features upgraded, I'm sure both Boeing and AA will be happy in the end.

Now, we may see lots of orders for MAX that may actually be intended to be orders for NSA. "We'll order the Max for 2027 delivery but what we really want is to be a NSA Launch customer." sort of thing. But, that's all fantasy talk at this date.

These MAX posts are getting quite absurd.. If AA wanted to, they could cancel the MAX and order 150 C919s, however they won’t.. I’ve seen a lot of posts and a lot of airlines say they’d cancel the MAX and yet they haven’t? Likely because after this sh*t storm ends and the media moves onto its next hot topic, the airlines will have enough bargaining chips to cash in and get more MAXs cheaper.. The general public can’t even find the bathroom on a plane, much less know if they’re on a MAX. Much like what happened to MH a few years ago, this too shall pass..

Agreed. So much hysteria over something that is likely to be resolved in short order. If we were still seeing issues 6 months from now, we might see some re-arrangement of orders, but in the mean time, I doubt anything will change and the MAX will go on to be one of Boeing's most successful aircraft in terms of sales.

Here's a couple of folks that get it. Hair on fire moments will pass and life will go on in the airline industry just fine.
