Aeroflot flying to San Francisco soon (hint on instagram)!?

Tue Mar 26, 2019 7:43 pm

I just saw this Instagram post by Aeroflot today: https://www.instagram.com/p/BveKvfVj1a9/

This is clearly a picture of the SF Golden Gate bridge. Is Aeroflot hinting at service to SFO soon? Are they allowed to add service with the current sanctions!?

Anyone from San Francisco would immediately tell you that is NOT the Golden Gate Bridge.

Indeed - different cable arrangement and different tower bracing. This bridge is in Lisbon, which already has Aeroflot service.

I guess Ponte 25 de Abril in Lisbon is the correct answer. There's nothing like 'guess the new destination' stated in the description. Aeroflot just wants to spice up our Tuesday with some game.

You are 100 percent correct. I lived there for years & knew with double cables, it was not the iconic bridge. But Portugal sounds nice in Spring.

I wouldn't be too hard on the OP. If you are not from either city, or a bridge expert, seeing a red suspension bridge in fog doesn't really scream Lisbon! to most people. If you translate, Aeroflot even hints in their first comments that the answer "isn't what people probably think", so they were being a bit cheeky on purpose.

(Although if you translate the next paragraph they do reveal it's Lisbon! )

OP, since it's been proven on here and Instagram that the photo was of Lisbon and not San Francisco, can you modify the title?

I believe Aeroflot historically served SVO-SEA-SFO, but I forget when it ended. Otherwise, Aeroflot is still flying to the US regardless of the sanctions and there still doing well in the market. Even if the US and Russia have issues, it's not going to stop people from travelling between both countries and choosing to transfer in SVO on the way to the US on Aeroflot, as SU probably does handle connecting passengers to the US.

With the bridge confusion behind us, I highly doubt this is the right time for SU to add more flights to the US. P2P travel between the two countries is down to just VFR traffic. Most Europeans would not fly east to then fly west if SU is trying to target connecting traffic via SVO. With political and economical sanctions in place, it is highly unlikely SU could get additional rights for a flight to San Francisco, which does not have a huge Russian émigré population, as it is the case in Los Angeles.
Keep calm and wash your hands.
