FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Enilria,
Thank you so very much for your hard work compiling and posting this data every week. It’s beyond appreciated.

. The BOS mini-hub is apparently a bit weak out of the gate
DL BOS-DCA SEP 4>3[0]
DL BOS-EWR SEP 3>1.8[0]
DL BOS-LGA JAN 15>13[12]
DL BOS-ORD SEP 3>2[0]
DL BOS-SFO NOV 1.6>1.0[1.3]

It’s due to gate availability with the Southwest relocation from Terminal A to B. Plans were to have all gates and ready by September 1st, it’s now the second half of September. Hence the reduction in the first half of September but it’s full steam ahead from the middle of the month onwards.

Every Sunday, coffee in hand, waiting for your report.

Thanks enilria!

Regarding B6 @ LAX - The fourth Mint frequency from FLL is badly needed. They only went up to 3x this past January and from what I understand the added capacity has been very well received. Mint is sold out near daily and walk-up fares can be higher than from JFK (even though the flight is 10% shorter). I expect the fourth flight to be well received too and further strengthen B6’s relevance in FLL while further applying pressure on AA and AS, and further differentiating themselves from WN/NK. Smart move IMO. Would be nice to see a third frequency on FLL-SFO too. It looks like this comes at the expense on a JFK-LAX flight which landed at LAX at 2:15am, which was probably not attracting the highest yields to begin with, and at 10x is very competitive while still matching DL frequency, doubling AS frequency, and 2x behind AA (which, with its 321T layout, is going for a very specific segment of the market).

It’s surprising to see DL reduce frequencies from BOS to DCA/EWR before even entering the markets. ORD looks light too. Could this be a mis-file?

Sun Country has moved its JFK flight to EWR's Terminal B and will not be returning to JFK.

These routes are already 2x daily most of the year. In the case of RDU-SFO it is only adding 1-2 extra flights per week during the period shown. I don't see why any of these additions wouldn't "stick", especially as they all have growing connections in the tech industry with SFO.

SY doesn’t operate 738Max, so the cut is unrelated.

Very nice. Appreciated.

Regarding B6 @ LAX - The fourth Mint frequency from FLL is badly needed. They only went up to 3x this past January and from what I understand the added capacity has been very well received. SFO transcons are notoriously weak in winter and airlines frequently over file the schedule and then cut it back. That’s why I said we’ll see. Yes, of the three RDU is the smallest change as the report notes.

I suspected that. It could be them selling their own tickets, they are starting to file charters with OAG like UA does, or just a misfile of charters to OAG.

Does anyone have record of how many times DL has tried SLC-ELP? At first it was SLC-ABQ-ELP (with 727-200s) when they merged with WA in 1987. Its been off and on with a nonstop RJ ever since.

The reason for B6 growth on FLL - LAX is American downgrade of MIA - LAX to 32B /38M / 738 Oasis. If AA wants to defend they have to add back the second daily 777.

This is a little surprising, they did pretty well on this route last year. Wonder if it has to do with aircraft availability

I should add that the one 777 daily on AA on MIA -LAX arrives into the remote 300’s and departs from TBIT.

Apparently not. LAX/LAS/PHX/SFO/SAN get their own ELP non-stops. So what's left for SLC to aggregate on the way to ABQ? Nothing - almost nothing. Look at a map of U.S. population density.

This is a good reminder that, while an efficient and useful hub, SLC just doesn't have the O&D or connection mojo of DEN, which supports 4x UA and 1x WN to ELP.

I'm curious as well. I think it's unfortunate that DL can't support more than the ATL flights out of ELP. I fly DL into ELP twice a year and I was looking forward to another option as far as the routing goes. I think they also tried MEM after the merger with NW, but that didn't last very long.

Previously seasonal
*AT BOS-CMN NOV 0>0.4[0] DEC 0>0.4[0] JAN 0>0.5[0]

Interesting add. AT has always been very conservative when it comes to its North America service and probably for good reason. Access to Africa in winter should be attractive to some people, though my gut is telling me this will only last one year. AT will also need to make connections plentiful and attractive to support this flight.

ELP is the farthest west DL spoke not to have a connection to another DL hub, right? Certainly the largest market, too?

As another poster noted, DL has been off and on the ELP-SLC route for years. It didn't last long at all this time.

Boutique Air flies DEN-TEX 2X day per their site. So this is where the PC-12 info came from I would bet.

Do it. They are very quirky little airplanes. And I don’t know about at higher fields, but they have plenty of get up and go closer to sea level.

El Paso is a tough market unless you are American, Southwest, or United. They own 90% of the market share and fly non-stop to the vast majority of the desired destinations of the local population. I will be surprised if Alaska’s new Seattle and San Diego service lasts more than a year.

B757Rocket thanks for clarifying, and enilria thank you as always for this list.

I write this from the Skyclub adjacent to A15 at BOS, and my check in agent was very enthusiastic about getting access to all of terminal A. She told me that they are going to fully renovate the club (which is already very nice), adding showers and moving the reception area outside of the current door to add a whole extra seating area. The staff seems very excited about all of the adds and the growth at the station.

If they can't make SLC-ELP work there is no way MSP-ELP would make any sense. I can't imagine there is any market for El Paso to Canada or the upper Midwest. MSP is too far north for any other logical connections.

or maybe enilria has seen some of the yield I've posted on a.net out of BOS. You think DL is down to 1x daily on BOS-SFO and dropped D1 service because they are doing well on this type of route?

It's not exactly a secret that BOS is a bloodbath right now. No need to question for ulterior motives when someone has worked this hard to piece together this thread every week.

I'm glad to see they finally added a 4th flight, since they are doing so well here. It's weird they are only doing it for July and August when FLL-LAX is in a slow season and JFK-LAX is in peak summer season. Maybe they can use that slot for something else? At this point, I'm comfortable in saying that BOS has all the mint aircraft it needs for the forseeable future. It seems like any additional mint aircraft should really go toward FLL. At some point, AS will probably give up on FLL-LAX. If they add more on FLL-SFO, I think UA will quit on that route. That 11th JFK-LAX frequency seems to be a convenient place they can always use freed up mint aircraft since they can always make money on it. Maybe we will hear more domestic mint plans in April 10th also. Seems like if they can get a more premium A321NEO for TATL, like with 24 to 30 J seats, those can also be deployed on JFK-LAX, increasing frequency without increasing the low yielding y cabin capacity.

Thanks enilria

I think B6 is missing a chance here with MCO. NK is getting a head start on them with CLE. And they are really not capitalizing on AA quitting on MCO. And Now NK is add capacity on EWR-MCO, a route that B6 cut back to 6 a day a while ago.

DL MSP-ELP now?

If they can't make SLC-ELP work there is no way MSP-ELP would make any sense. I can't imagine there is any market for El Paso to Canada or the upper Midwest. MSP is too far north for any other logical connections.

MSP-ELP was tried before in 2005 but with a CRJ200. Not the right aircraft at that time. SLC is too small compared to hubs like DEN PHX LAX in the west competing for connections. In the Midwest it’s just ORD. CRJ700 should be an ok attempt if DL is interested in in expanding in ELP. SLC is a fair try.

I also recall the mid-00s CRJ flight. IINM it was the longest CRJ flight in the world at the time, and yes, it was the wrong airplane. Unfortunately for ELP, I think it was more a case of to many CRJs and not enough viable routes than a case of the route having potential.

Did AS fire all their route planners? They have filed barely anything over the last 2ish months I feel like. It’s a little concerning to see them on auto pilot, especially as they battle DL in Seattle, UA in SFO and everyone at LAX.

Look at the HRL-MSP market. A vast majority of "snowbirds" flying that route on SY and DL. There are a lot of winter Texans that come from Minnesota and the upper mid-west (and Canada!).

MSP-ELP could be winter seasonal on a CRJ900.

The seasonal service too could work. Saturday flight during summer if successful

As another poster noted, DL has been off and on the ELP-SLC route for years. It didn't last long at all this time.

Unless you are referring to cities that DL currently connects to ATL then ELP is not correct.

Fresno MSA is larger than El Paso MSA and further west. Using the 2017 census estimates: Fresno MSA is 989,255, El Paso MSA is 844,818.

Fresno currently only has 3X CRJ/CR7s to SLC on DL, no other DL hub flights.

Thru the late 1990s, DL had a large schedule at FAT. There was mainline service to SLC, LAX and RNO plus connection flights to BUR and others. That was all discontinued leaving only FAT-SLC.

BOS has been a targeted growth market for DL for some time now. It's not new news. As such. it should not come as a surprise to anyone that there will be expansion and contraction in frequency within specific city pairs as the free market determines who gets what share of the business. To think otherwise is shortsighted. The trend line over time will tell the true story.

I think DTW-ELP probably makes more sense than MSP-ELP. The trouble for DTW is that much of the demand is to Juárez (auto suppliers), and the current political climate makes land crossings challenging, meaning that flying to ELP to drive to Juárez makes less sense.

As always, thanks enilria for the Sunday updates.

I realize not every airline has a presence in every market, but it seems odd to me that DL is again going back to only having ELP accessible via ATL. Obviously I am wrong, but it seems like they should be able to make able to make at least one flight a day work to and from SLC. It also shows my ignorance, and I realize what a mega-hub ATL is, but in my armchair CEO mind SLC would be more doable than ATL.

Since DL doesn't have a Texas hub, it's kind of hard to serve it the way AA/UA/WN do.

SLC I guess just doesn't have enough O&D to ELP and it may not be as ideal as DEN/PHX is for connections west? I have no idea........

Their VP of Network Planning was cut with the management layoffs in late 2018 so I have to wonder if that might have anything to do with it. Additionally, haven’t they told Wall Street that their growth is pretty low this year? Under 2%? With little growth planned that would lend itself to very little new route news.

I wonder if DL could jump on LAX-ELP. Then again, unlike AA or UA, it doesn't appear to be very invested in LAX these days.

It has long been rumored that G4 has long term plans to fly these routes themselves. That said however I have seen no sign nor heard no word whatsoever that this is imminent.
