Icelandair leases two 767s for extra lift during 737MAX grounding

Mon Apr 01, 2019 10:58 am

Icelandair has leased in two additional 767 aircraft until September 2019 to partly replace the grounded 737MAX aircraft that are grounded.
The airline is also actively looking for a 3rd 767 aircraft.

Well, that's true. Some of those threads today have been abhorrently bad.

However, in this case this is true. Icelandair are indeed leasing 2 extra 767s until September and is looking for the 3rd one.

Anyone know from whom they are leasing the 767s ? Are they a dry lease (ie Icelandair operated) or a wet lease (operated by another airline) ?

If the 767s are to be operated by an airline other than Icelandair, and that airline happens to be relatively unusual, I might find myself needing to go to Reykjavik over the spring :-)

Yes I know there are all sorts of damp leases...

This. How many airlines can offer 2 767's on such short notice?

I've heard from reliable sources these are EuroAtlantic birds, the 2-class 262 seat description also fits that. Not sure if the potential 3rd one is as well.

I was checking tickets to Paris for the airshow and a 767 is servicing MSP. I can only assume this is one of them? I believe Icelandair was using a 757-200 + Max 8 at MSP.

I don't think there are 787s available for immediate leasing like the jobs done by Euro Atlantic, HiFly, Wamos Air, etc.
I wonder when people will understand:
Embraer 190 or simply E190, not ERJ-190. E-Jets are NOT ERJs!
Boeing 747-8, not Boeing 747-800. Same goes for 787.
Airbus A320, not Airbus 320.
Airbii does not exist.

The two leased bird should be CS-TKR AND CS-TKS. Both are in 262 (C16Y246) configuration, ex-KQ birds.

They are the best among 767s that EuroAtlantic has, having Thompson Vantage J class and Mirius Y seats.

Oh golly, I didn't know you could shove 2-4-2 on a 767. Sounds miserable.

C looks nice, though. Should be an interesting experiment for Icelandair on the merits of offering a nicer seat in Saga class...

They need them fast. That's why they took these, quite possibly as wet leases, so they can get them into service ASAP.
Norwegian is having to use an A330 on their SWF-DUB route from Evelop Airlines.
I would imagine there is quite the scramble to find available aircraft right now.

Eastern in the USA operates four similar B763 frames that are Qantas-configured (J30Y214), but do they have an EU foreign carrier permit? And are those already accounted for?

As per the link, Icelandair is looking for a third 767 as well. If it's CS-TKR/S, CS-TKS was leased capacity for LOT for a good while last summer. FI is short about 20 percent of total seat capacity as they were relying on the B38M and B39M. (At least EuroAtlantic configures the planes itself, unlike Hi Fly, who keeps the prior operator's configuration.)

As for Norwegian, they're using a Y388 plane (the densest 2-4-2 configuration in the world) to sub for two Y189 flights on SWF-DUB (EC-MII just ferried from Madrid to Dublin for that).

All of there currently 767s are 319ER’s ex NZ.

I think 2-4-2 A330 is still manageable compared to 3-3-3 A330. 388 is 52 seats away from max. capacity 440. Cebu Pacific and Lion Air configuration are a killer.

No more, all three previously stored at ASP have gone for freighter conversion as we speak.

The problem with the 737MAX isn’t just the aircraft not being delivered.

There is also the lack of availability of the aircraft that they would have replaced and those older aircraft will likely need extra MX time. Especially if they were due to be retired shortly before a Major check was due.

Also with WN, who were due to get the B737MAX, there are reasons linked to type ratings which prevent re activation of B737-300. Ditto AA with the MD80.

I can not find anything in that thread about cancellations or delays because of problems with the frames, I read about scheduling problems.

I understand passengers not being over joyed with the narrow seats, small pitch and limited recline if this frames are used on long haul, but I assume Icelandair will not use them on LH, but on shorter flights to hubs.

I think the same could be said for any of the emgency leases recently to cover the 787/737MAX issues.

For example HiFlys 343s were publicity hated and trushed in the media by NZ’s passengers. At the end of the day it’s either get you from A to B safely or cancelle your flight.

Is using 767 capacity to replace 737-8 Max capacity also to do with filling in the WOW void, or why aren't they leasing 737-800's for example ?

I assume Icelandair is leasing 767 because they are available. If 737-800 or 757 would be available they would lease them too. They have 737MAX pilots sitting around.

I assume they will use the extra 767 on the thick routes, like LHR, CPH, AMS, SEA and cut frequencies, using the 757-200 for thinner routes, cutting all routes that do not carry a 757-200.

It is really a double whammy. WOW dropping out and the unavailability of the MAX. FI could have cashed inn.

The recent bankruptcies of smaller scheduled or charter airline like Primera, Cobalt, Small Planet Airlines and Germania also hasten the lack of spare availability. There should be more spare aircraft lying around, but lessors repossessed their assets fast to avoid entangled in court battle and most older aircraft are sent for scrapping. Wow Air aircraft are now subjected to court proceedings so they can't touch those. Even if they could, it is a totally different fleet, Boeing vs. Airbus. Need to set up or hire a third party to handle operation from ground up.

Omni Air in the US has ~10 B767s, including a few older -200s, that do passenger-carrying ACMI work, as well as three B777s. Many of their airplanes are spoken for with various US military passenger carrying flights, but they serve all types of clients from pop up work to sports charters. I suspect they are getting extra work because of the Max situation

Is there anymore news regarding the lessor? Can't find any news source that mention where they get the 767's from.
