Virgin Atlantic drops Flying Lady

Tue Apr 02, 2019 9:47 am

At first i thought it was a bad april-fools but I really like the idea of this.

The flying lady will be replaced by diverse men and woman while retaining the tradititonal look, good on Virgin Atlantic to do this.
The article (in Dutch) also states that Virgin tries to remove the income-gap and the glass ceiling. Also doing little things like allowing the female cabin crew to wear trousers and no make-up. It's the little things that make the difference.
This is only on the new A350-1000's for now, but I wouldn't be surprised if this would go fleed-wide someday.

I applaud the idea of inclusivity. But is this not a step too far? The flying lady was an iconic brand symbol, it didn’t mean only straight white men flew Virgin. As a gay man I’m no more of less likely to fly VS just because you’ve a man in rainbow pants painted on the plane

The only thing that is needed to foster diversity and inclusiveness is just to be good to and respect others.

Anything else is a political or corporate stunt.

Why have they got Jimmy Page in rainbow shorts (discreetly turned to avoid displaying willyage)....?

Are Led Zeppelin fans now a minority?

It's a small thing, it cost them nothing and it is well recieved by some. And it's still a iconic symbol this way.

I love this! I think it's nice to see little touches that promote the culture of an airline. Of course that's just my opinion!

It looks like a particularly PC version of The Avengers. They also seem a bit cartoon like, I prefer the original Virgin lady to be honest.

I wish they kept the Flying Lady and included the new icons and paint them interchangeably across the fleet? I'm not talking about any win-win situation, but one where the firm keeps its original identity whilst moving with the times
Thank u, next.

This is fantastic!! Well done VS, keep the branding but modernise it. Hope VA do the same.

I think people are mistake, this isn’t to remind you there are other people out there in the world who are different —— it’s for people to look up and see someone who looks like them!

Perspective is key, look at the world from not only your corner. I hope we see this idea expanded for different models :)

What about obese people? Will there be a person in a wheelchair? What about really old people? Terminally ill. They have a right to be included too. Also, I would like to see pictures of right-wingers. Just for inclusion purposes. Yeah, why not a skinhead version to go along with a punk version?

And, to really be progressive: what about animals? Shall they be included too? Also the nasty one's? Tapeworm, anyone?

I still believe (hope) that this is a late April fools joke.

Ridiculous...

This is where the struggle for equality gets ridiculed and perverted into pure virtue signaling. It is absolutely possible to become a more inclusive company while still keeping the iconic flying lady.

Utterly ridiculous...

Just a general FYI: if you get upset over VS being more “inclusive” with their flying lady emblem (although I’m 99% this was a April Fools joke Dutch media picked up late) then you are just as bad as the people complaining about how the flying lady is sexist.

Especially when 3/5 are still attractive ladies.

Branson is long gone from this corporate puppet. The flying lady was an image of his mother and put there in honor of her.

The 'flying lady' with the Union Jack came from the similar artwork of sexy/attractive women on WWII military bombers, especially by the USA ones. They pretty much disappeared in the 1950's as times changed. Yes, this might be an April Fools' Joke and works as has some plausibility, but the reality is that such artwork may be just not right for our times as to many women who make up a significant part of your customers. It also may be pressure by their ownership partner the USA's Delta Air Lines.

Jesus. If true, absolute BS. The world has gone crazy on Political correctness stuff. And those companies who actively promote these PC stuff will be the first on my blacklist.

If they try to be inclusive, where are the people from other backgrounds e.g. Asian or Middle East muslims?

It was not an image of his mother. It is an illustration inspired by the work of Alberto Vargas’ pin-up drawings in the 1940s that were popularly applied to the noses of WWII aircraft.

Why are people getting so offended? From both sides? Like the flying lady is an icon, and it's part of the entire VS image. So it's kinda a shame to see it go. But at the same time this is a pretty nice thing. Everyone does get offended by everything. Calm down.

It's an April fool's stunt. Yesterday, I had an email from VS saying they will operate a flight, I think it was to EWR, with an all-gay flight & cabin crew, allegedly when NY pride is on. Forgot the date in question as I deleted it quickly.

I really can't see the problem with this. Surely they have just updated and expanded the flying lady range and made some of them men?

I find that the kind of people who don't see the need for diversity are the kind of people who don't know what it feels like to experience prejudice and bigotry.

Its not an April fool its true and they are running a competition for TA's who book the most VS flights to enter to win a seat on the flight and the celebrations in NYC. Departs 28/6-2/7. With all the shite going round yesterday though you could be forgiven to not knowing what was fact and what was not ! So dig it out of your trash folder and log those bookings .

You average teen probably hasn't heard of Virgin Atlantic if we are honest and once single Tweet from a Kardashian clone likely does more damage in terms of fat shaming people than Virgin has in its near 35 year history.

And if we are to worry about fat shaming or weight issues what about Pakistan International who will sack crew if they get too tubby?

Why is it that the people who claim "PC gone mad" are often the ones most offended by anything.

This is essentially nothing, they're changing a logo which they have every right to do, nobody was offended by the original flying lady, this is just them showing a bit of diversity.

Virgin Atlantic is trying way too hard. It looks terrible. This isn’t about being inclusive, it’s about sucking up to the mainstream social establishment and trying to score political points. It’s about money and business, thinking the masses will love them for their “diversity” and buy more tickets when in reality they could care less about “diverse” men.

Does it include a specific example of the Virgin Atlantic lady inducing anorexia? The black woman and gay boy aren’t exactly chubby are they? Will they induce anorexia? Where the fat flag carrier?
