So they will be using the current terminal for now, correct? It looks like American stops service on October 31 so it would make sense. I’m on the inaugural so can’t wait to get back to HVN!

Yes actually AA ends on 9/30 and the plan that was released by Avports showed modular trailer-type additions connected to and around the current old dump converted hangar "terminal" to add a large check in area and a boarding gate area .. as well as another for their airline offices. They plan on using only ramp-boarding (not the upper level jetway gate currently used by American Eagle) for the time being. The brand new terminal to be built across the field is a few years (and a few hundred fights and lawsuits) away. The airport "neighbors" have issues with it all, of course ... but these geniuses all bought homes right next to an existing commercial airport .. and hate the idea of any expansion so they're making as much trouble as they can.
The rest of us in the area are genuinely thrilled, though. This is huge, exciting news for the area. Avelo starts with 2 737s in early November with, from what we hear) a third one coming in November. Already booked for MCO in December ourselves.

I have zippo sympathy for the people who bought homes down there. Not only did they buy long after the airport was there, they destroyed tons of wetlands, rare bird habitats, and beaches during their all out overdevelopment. Full throttle takeoffs with shallow climb rates please.

These are all charters for ICE.

What about TPA and RSW? It would make perfect sense since AS flies to all 4 cities to cut a deal with them.

TPA and RSW are contracted

Would still make sense that AS would handle FLL and MCO and then they could make a deal with the contractor for TPA/RSW. I've never once seen a job open on Alaska for FLL/MCO, but I'd assume that is a very high listed internal posting that never makes it to the external board.
Off hand, do you know who handles TPA/RSW and the under wing for FLL and MCO?

I don’t know which companies AS contracts with in TPA and RSW. FLL and MCO used to be contract but have been internal for some years now.
bluecrew wrote:FNL is... interesting. I live in Denver. I have a bad commute.
When people come to Colorado, by and large, they fly to Denver. Yes, there's Eagle/Vail/etc., which are all basically vacation traffic especially considering the price tag to get there... that's nothing compared to the resorts! The Springs keeps a tidy traffic number from people local or military-related traffic, but even people coming from the Springs routinely drive to Denver to fly.
Springs is 3x the size of Fort Collins... and they eke out regional jet flights and the occasional mainline to major airline hubs, plus a little low cost presence. Yeah, Fort Collins is a blast and it's near some good destination type spots, but it's not going to draw that sort of traffic. I'd bet they go Allegiant here and market this as the "Denver - Loveland Airport," if not initially then maybe 6 months after they start.
Tough market to say the least - others have tried and failed at FNL. Good on them for giving it a shot though.

PBI is bookable and settles down to 5 per week (Thu-Mon) after the holiday season. If the holiday change to RSW given in the article from 3 weekly to daily is really happening, the extra flights aren't bookable yet.

From what I understand, PBI was the most requested destination when they asked for help from the social media community. My thought is if they are working with Alaska to ground handle, they had to delay to figure out how they would logistically make PBI work.
From my searches it looks like RSW and TPA are doing surprisingly well. I’m a bit concerned about FLL. No surprises if RSW and TPA go daily for the holidays.
I know personally I will use FLL-HVN if it’s offered in the future. So I hope it survives!

They have their own staff for one flight a day from FLL to SEA?! That’s crazy… how long has that been going on?

Yes! About time. Now that route will do fantastic. They missed the bus with ABQ now that WN jumped on it. Maybe COS or BOI soon hopefully. I’d honestly like them to add TPA or FLL and connect the east west markets and give BUR some Florida destinations.

Now this is what I'm talking about. An actual market that has some traction here in the LA area. Ive been wanting to have my cousin come visit forever from Tucson and now she'll be able to fly on the cheap on Avelo. Any idea of starting date?

The 800's can't fly into HVN, but the 700's can be used to BUR and eventually they will do some other flying into Florida from a city that can handle the 800.
As I was browsing their job offerings I saw a lot of corporate listings in the Houston area. That would be a geographically good stopping point from BUR to Florida.

While United really should be strongly considering jumping back in with the CRJ-550/700 and ERJ-170/175 being capable, Avelo has real potential to serve ORD/MDW (I'm saying MDW more likely) with daily or twice daily flights if United doesn't jump in.
FTW is interesting and has potential for BUR however, on the New Haven side, I again really think you'd see HVN-DFW/DAL first. I also think being a Houston HQ'd airline Houston will happen first before Dallas/Ft Worth. AUS or SAT would certainly be an interesting addition.

Honestly it's pretty easy to figure out what ought to work out of HVN -- just look at what's strong from BDL and adjust for geography or markets which might only work well from BDL due to corporate ties. For example, WAS (particularly BWI) or PHL would probably not work as well from HVN due to competition with Acela and/or driving. MSP punches surprisingly high from BDL (it's a top 10 market) but that's likely due to the insurance industry/United Healthcare.
So yeah, Chicago ought to work, and so should DEN and DFW (they're not going to get gate access at DAL). MYR might work -- NK manages to stimulate that market with low fares from BDL. LAS does surprisingly poorly from BDL; I suspect that's due to relatively high fares and the large casino complexes in eastern CT. I don't believe Houston or Austin would succeed since there's really not much consistent leisure demand between Connecticut and either of those cities.

Really such a shame about AA leaving HVN too. I connected at DCA a couple of weeks ago on AA and saw nonstops to a a slew of places that surprised me .. PFN, MGM, ACK, MVY, HXD, ECP, BGR, LAN, CAK, JAN. I stood there looking at the screen thinking that HVN really should be there. I hope AA looks again at HVN in the future and reconsiders. Even if its just to that mess that is PHL .. but better .. CLT, DCA or ORD.
KRIC777 wrote:FlyingElvii wrote:KRIC777 wrote:The US needs another budget airline?
Actually, yes...
There are plenty of airports and routes out there, and any competition for the US4 is welcomed. Competition inspires good customer services, something very lacking on US airlines these days.
The toughest part is getting around the loyalty plans.
True, competition is good, but I think in the US airline industry, competition just inspires lower fares and less service. And it seems like every US airline is already trying to be a "budget" airline anyway.
