HA Starts HNL-BOS Today. Longest Scheduled Domestic Flight in US HIstory

Thu Apr 04, 2019 6:00 pm

Hawaiian Airlines is set to begin service today on it's newest route, HNL to BOS. At a distance of 5095 miles, it is the longest scheduled domestic US flight in the history of US aviation. HA Flight #90 will leave Honolulu today at 1:55pm and arrive in Boston at 5:50am the next day. Hawaiian has designated number 90 as the flight number to match the years of service that Hawaiian has been flying. HA began service in 1929 and is one of the oldest airlines in the world. This flight will operate 5 days per week, leaving HNL on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. On Friday, April 5th, HA will inaugurate the return flight #89 back to HNL from BOS. This flight is scheduled at 11 hours and 25 minutes. Longer than Boston to Istanbul, longer than Boston to Moscow. Let's hope this route thrives and more East Coast expansion will happen soon.

I'm assuming a widebody will be used for this route.

Good assumption...the MAX-90 is not in production yet.

Let me guess: either their A330-200 or their B717. Hmmmm.....

Oops....forgot about the A321. No passengers sounds about right.

GUM is not part of any of the 50 states. It's a territory, thus it's not domestic per se. Distance-wise, it's longer, per gcmap.

I’ve flown HA from HNL to SYD. That’s about 20% shorter that BOS to HNL.

SFO-GUM sure is a Domestic flight.

From the Horse's Mouth: https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail ... erritories

"U.S. Citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR's) who travel directly between parts of the United States, which includes Guam, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), without touching at a foreign port or place, are not required to present a valid U.S. Passport or U.S. Green Card."

Lies, damn lies, statistics, and marketing.

This being the "longest scheduled domestic flight in US History" is just marketing.

There is no SFO-GUM non-stop as the island of Guam is not high yielding according to UA (all traffic to/from GUM goes through HNL unless you fly on a 738 to HKG or NRT in East Asia).

It's not remotely time-efficient. It's more than 2x the total travel time of the best BOS-SFO-AKL. It's 22 hours more than a Delta BOS-LAX-SYD. That's properly called 'not even trying.'

:checkmark:

It is indeed domestic when flying to/from US territories. Just returned home from SJU, and the whole SJU-JFK-LAX trip was like any other domestic trip between states.

While the Southwest bound flights from Boston to AUS/NZ do not work well connection wise, the Northeast bound return flights to Boston from both SYD and AKL have great connectivity. . If you took HA from SYD to HNL to BOS, the total travel time would be 23 hours and 10 minutes. HA 452 departs SYD at 9:40pm arrives HNL at 10:30am for a total flight time of 9 hours and 50 minutes. HA 90 departs HNL at 1:55pm and arrives Boston at 5:50am. for a total flight time of 9 hours and 55 minutes. With a 3 hour and 25 minute layover in HNL, the total travel time comes out to 23 hours and 10 minutes.
Total transit time from AKL to HNL to BOS on HA is 23 hours and 25 minutes, making both routes time efficient.

I have a UA Hawaii 1971 brochure. "On all nonstops from New York, Chicago, Detroit, Boston, Washington. I don't think they ever flew Detroit or Boston nonstop, but they had 10 DC-8-62s, so they planned for it. Washington was BWI nonstop.

Your math is severely flawed. If you took HA from SYD to HNL to BOS, the total travel time would be 23 hours and 10 minutes. HA 452 departs SYD at 9:40pm arrives HNL at 10:30am for a total flight time of 9 hours and 50 minutes. Total transit time from AKL to HNL to BOS on HA is 23 hours and 25 minutes, making both routes time efficient.

And how does the BOS service connect to the HNL-SYD and HNL-AKL services? Isn't so helpful if those connections only work one way.

Also, the fares are surprisingly low for such a long flight. Checking google flights the one way fare on many dates is just $281. Not quite sustainable fares for a +11 hour flight.

HA needs to RE-TIME the flight west-bound for BOS to SYD as BOS-HNL (HA#89) arrives at 245pm and HNL-SYD (HA#451) departs 1250pm resulting in a +1 day delay. If they really want to sell J on this flight they need to make it connect to SYD, BNE & AKL as SYD is a global city with lots of multinationals and there's lots of consulting firms in BOS.

On my 1970 UA Air Atlas, their is an inset map of the Hawaiian islands. "Non-stop routes to Hawaii from: Boston, New York, Buffalo, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, Kansas City," I guess they had big plans and high hopes.

1/2 true.... Guam sends a non-voting delegate/representative to the House of Representatives, along with American Samoa, the District of Columbia (DC), the U.S. Virgin Islands & the Northern Marina Islands also send one.

The problem with that is the current timetable is:

HNL 1355 - 0550 BOS
BOS 0910 - HNL 1355

HNL 1240 - 1945 SYD
SYD 2140 - 1135 HNL

The problem is that the SYD timetable is pretty fixed given the need to get in and out of SYD before the 2300 curfew, otherwise the aircraft is stuck until at least 0600 the next day. To make the BOS-HNL-SYD connection work, they'd need to retime the HNL-BOS-HNL flight something similar:

HNL 1300 - 0455 BOS
BOS 0630 - 1125 HNL

However, now you have quite an early departure ex-BOS that is probably not very appealing to the local BOS-HNL market. I would presume HA has looked at the connecting opportunities and decided the route is better off focused on the O&D market.

It would appear that saying "In the history of US aviation" is where an error may appear, as Braniiff did fly non-stop from LAX to GUM.

Pretty long flight for the 1970s!

Qantas16, didn't know about the SYD airport curfew. Yeah it looks like the JFK flight doesn't connect with the SYD flight either. HA is seriously missing out on J revenue of JFK-SYD (which on QF goes as high as $12-15k last minute round-trip) as they now have a decent 1-2-1 international business class product that's being retrofitted onto the A330's.

Ok, so apparently some US airline once flew to Guam from the Continental US. I would be happy to edit the topic subject to get rid of the word "History" but unfortunately, I can't figure out how to do that. It doesn't take away from the fact that this is still an historic day for both Hawaiian Airlines and US Aviation.

The longest is Paris-Reunion, 5,809 Miles, 9,349km (statute miles- the OP lists statute miles as well)

https://travelupdate.boardingarea.com/l ... ir-routes/

For the record, Guam-Boston would be 7,969 SM (12,825 km). Not sure if we'd ever see it flown but I'm sure it is one of the longest domestic routes possible, if not the longest.

At the risk of sparring with the resident a.net pendants, the news article cited says:
"It will be the longest flight within the U.S."

which is completely accurate - because, despite Guam being "domestic" and its native population being US citizens, it is also true that it is not *within the United States" (as is also true of D.C. , Puerto Rico and elsewhere). It does not say "with the US and territories or districts".

So...... the article is accurate - the longest flight from one state to another, is this flight. Until Guam is a state, it cannot qualify.

Cool, GUM-LAX-SCL one-stop service. Got to love the 74L. GUM was a stop enroute to HKG it looks like. I don't think this lasted much longer than a year. SEL, SIN, HKG & GUM were all dropped pretty fast. I heard HP style horror stories (think HNL-NGO) on these flights in regards to passenger counts.

Here is route map from July 1979, it shows how fast the ramp up was for Asia. http://www.departedflights.com/BN070179.html

Same routes in April 1980: http://www.departedflights.com/BN042780.html

At it's height in January 1980 - http://www.timetableimages.com/ttimages/bn8001.htm

By October 1980 it was all gone - http://www.timetableimages.com/i-bc/bn8010i.jpg

HA isn’t trying to connect people over HNL to Australia. They are trying to bring people to Hawaii.
As we celebrate mediocrity, all the boys upstairs want to see, how much you'll pay for what you used to get for free.

Out of curiousity, is this the longest nonstop domestic flight in the world? Maybe France to some of its territories?

The longest is Paris-Reunion, 5,809 Miles, 9,349km (statute miles- the OP lists statute miles as well)

https://travelupdate.boardingarea.com/l ... ir-routes/

For the record, Guam-Boston would be 7,969 SM (12,825 km). Not sure if we'd ever see it flown but I'm sure it is one of the longest domestic routes possible, if not the longest.

I believe the longest domestic flight possible would likely be CDG-PPT, though it's obviously not currently down nonstop. It would be 9,765SM.

Longer than SFO-GUM?

GUM is not part of any of the 50 states. It's a territory, thus it's not domestic per se. Distance-wise, it's longer, per gcmap.

HNL-GUM and reverse is considered an international flight by UA. Moreover, I’ve flown HNL-GUM and reserve nonstop. I went through Customs in GUM and in HNL when I returned.

With WN entering the Hawaii market they very well may need to consider offering connections to supplement their current strategy.

Well custom doesn't mean another country. Just like in one of the many proposal for Brexit there will be custom check between Northern Ireland and rest of Britain, and that doesn't make flights between London and Belfast international
Say NO to Hong Kong police's cooperation with criminal organizations like triad.

Fair enough. Though my first statement stands as fact that the only airline operating on the route designates it as and
international flight.
