Cathay Pacific planes flying on Cathay Dragon flights?

Fri Apr 05, 2019 4:52 pm

I was looking at KA's HKG-KUL flights, and notice that it seems that randomly, CX's aircraft are used on them.

CX transferred all KUL service to KA a while ago, but when I was looking at Flightradar's record of flight KA731 (HKG>KUL), I notice that in the last 7 days, the flight was operated by CX A333 on 2 days (Mar 31 and Apr 5, with B-HLQ and B-HLD respectively).

https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/ka731

B-HLQ is even an A333 with Premium Economy and long range lie-flat Business Class seats.

Has CX/KA started mixing their aircraft (especially the A333) on these high density regional routes?

Yes.

I was scheduled to fly KA 732 on 15 March but when I got to the gate the aircraft was a CX A333 in the old config (very small J cabin of only a couple or so rows, with old fixed-YCL seats). The captain and ISM referred to our flight as "Cathay Dragon service operated by Cathay Pacific Airways".

CX has been doing wet lease flights for KA for years as and when required. They happen time to time, I have done KUL and KHH flights. Hardest part is using the correct callsign. Also done LD flights.

Thank you for the reply. Didn't realize CX is doing some of KA's flying.

It’s just as required on a wet lease basis

PEN and KUL went to KA who operate the majority of flights.

Why transfer, don’t know. Probably mainly based on what the market competitors are on the routes.

Industrial issues at CX and the inability for them to crew all the flights required led to KUL going to KA. Penang went earlier with the increase of CX freighter flying meaning less yield for the passenger aircraft which previously relied quite a bit on freight there.
