When exactly did AA stop MD-80 service to LAS?

Fri Apr 05, 2019 9:14 pm

Was browsing around and found a pic of N961TW at LAS as recently as January.

Thank you for the answers. Reason I am asking is because I was absolutely sure that they had stopped long before Januray 2019.

That 1st photo seems fishy to me. Pre-2013 American livery and 2 Southwest planes in the pre-2014 livery. Doesn't seem like January this year

Is there a second AA aircraft in that photo that I don’t see? All S80s remain in the old livery, as do plenty of WN aircraft.
I can't decide whether I miss the tulip or the bowling shoe more

Not to mention both of those WN aircraft have split scimitar winglets.

The one with the KLM 744 in the foreground is from 1/7/19. It was here as a charter for CES.

I watched this MD80 Lansing while I was on my way home from work.. Thought it was quite awesome to see an AA MD80 here in LAS.. There are also plenty of WN planes wearing canyon blue. I’d imagine you’ll be seeing Canyon Blue for a little while longer..

I'm guessing the MD-80 you saw was an equipment sub or a one-off for CES. It has been a few years since AA flew MD-80s to LAS on a regularly scheduled basis, although I don't remember exactly when they stopped. They used to be common visitors to LAS from LAX, DFW, STL, and ORD. Either DFW-LAS or ORD-LAS would have been the last route to see them regularly.
This is my signature until I think of a better one.

AA flew several extra flights DFW-LAS during the January period for CES including MD-80 flights. Prior to these flights, they pulled the MD-80s out of LAS about two years ago...

So assuming they are not retired by 2020, would it be possible to fly an MD-80 LAS-DFW next year around CES time?

I last heard they are being retired around Labor Day this year. But I could be wrong / that could've changed.

Not counting on any rushed retirements now with those MAX aircraft being grounded. Maybe 501 goes, since she's the last MD-82, but those ex TW birds are quite young for MD-80 standards.
