FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

No, SFO is still there. Remember that there were two seperate times in which these routes were added. CLE and DFW were added in the fall of 2017, and then BWI, SFO and MCI were added in January. Only BWI is gone of the january addition. All of these routes started in May/June 2018.

Since the merger with US, AA does not consider JFK a hub. It's an O&D station and that's about it.

5 is the lightest I’ve seen UA go on BOS-SFO.They may be signaling that there’s too much metal flying between these cities.
Next Trip:
JAL 7-8 BOS-NRT-BOS, 787-9

Could AA’s cuts be due to the runway closure?

Do they still put a 777 in peak season?

It’s for May, so most likely due to the Max groundings and having to shuffle around exisitng airframes to cover the flying.

So they call LGA a hub then? Right from an AA press release less than a week old:

American has hubs in Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Washington, D.C.

Interesting to see SAN dropping off a lot from three key AA destinations... market softening?

There’s a runway closure at JFK from May-November. Most carriers will reduce frequencies during that time as there simply isn’t enough runway capacity.

Considering BA added PIT-LHR and AA is upping capacity on PIT-LGA, I’m really surprised they are adding frequency on this route.

I think it is an error in the booking system as JFK-PHL also appears to be going from completely cut to 5r/t in the dead of winter which wouldn't make sense.

Looks like AA is just boosting up PIT/BWI in December to squat on slots until they figure out how to use those slots. AA has cut down JFK considerably so I am sure they have quite few slots sitting around that they don't want to give up too easily, especially when UA is talking about re-entering JFK most likely adding further competition on AA's bread and butter SFO/LAX flights.

The runway closure came at a perfect time for AA as they have a good excuse to not use those slots without risking forfeiture, but come December its a different ball game.

No doubt this close in they are max related. However it shows that JFK is the weakest link. B6 and DL fly against them on many of these routes. It seems that AA is turning into the incredible shrinking airline in New York.
Airlines flown: AA, AB, AC, AY, BA, CO, DL, DY, EW, F9, G4, IB, KL, LH, LX, NK, NW, NZ, OS, QF, SN, TP, UA, US, VA, VC, WN, XE

The runway closure has been known for a long time. Why would changes for summer only be made now when carriers have been informed quite some time ago? Also, why haven't B6 and DL reduced summer flights at JFK to the degree AA has been doing?

The below link was from Sep 2018 and at that time, the timeframe (April till end 2019) was already known:

No, SFO is still there. Remember that there were two seperate times in which these routes were added. CLE and DFW were added in the fall of 2017, and then BWI, SFO and MCI were added in January. Only BWI is gone of the january addition. All of these routes started in May/June 2018.

DFW still has KEF. American Airlines, seasonal. 3 carriers jumped on the route, one is left.

BOS-JFK is not heavily O&D; most of the BOS-NYC O&D traffic is to LGA (the shuttle flights). The JFK flights are used primarily to feed connections.

I think the cuts speak more to AA refocusing its attention away from connections at JFK and towards the core NYC O&D market (which they still serve quite well).

Fairly well publicized that these are MAX related. These routes are all operated with the MAX, are close in cuts, and are currenty in the schedule after June.

And yes while AA has been cutting JFK lately, these are just operational cuts due to runway construction. It’s going to be a nightmare, might as well cut some flights to lessen the pain. But hey, let all the conspiracy theorists have their fun.

There is plenty of O&D between BOS-JFK. Plenty of New Yorkers and LI people that prefer JFK over LGA.

Some of it is Max related, but more than not, those routes are just bleeding money and are not going to stick around much longer. JFK-SEA might have been the single lowest yielding transcon route in AA's entire network in Q4. Even worse than ATL/MCO-LAX.

Again, B6 and DL make no cuts at all.

AA somehow found enough capacity to add to JFK-ORD from May on, but cut actual business markets SEA/SAN and BOS/RDU.

If you have seen the numbers I posted out of JFK, this would not be a surprise at all.

Also, the Dec/Jan adds are just slot squatting moves. AA needs to figure out how to keep those slots around since it's down to 80 flights in peak summer season.

The AA JFK cuts are just extending the June schedule through most of the rest of the year. No new cuts that I can see beyond what we already discussed in previous weeks.

Considering BA added PIT-LHR and AA is upping capacity on PIT-LGA, I’m really surprised they are adding frequency on this route.

I think it is a simple matter of AA wanting to put up a fight against DL in the important PIT-NYC market. DL has been very aggressive with PIT-LGA. Perhaps a lack of slots and/or the terminal reconstruction at LGA is limiting AA from adding frequency so they are adding at JFK to match the capacity DL already offers there? If they are simply sitting on JFK slots then why the cuts at CLE, BOS, and elsewhere? We'll see if these adds stick.

I can’t speak to that, no idea. I assume JFK is a money losing operation, AA offer a poor ULCC product, unlike B6 and DL, so I assume the others can command strong revenue premium. But I also know that cutting stuff like JFKBOS and JFKPHL is easy, because it’s mostly connecting traffic that can be rerouted.

Neither DL nor B6 have Max jets, of course they are not cutting.

Agreed on Norwegian. If you are talking about AA, I think they would cut the worst flying which is apparently JFK. Norwegian doesn’t really have a choice of what to cut except with the 787 now operating SWF-DUB.

They wouldn't be cutting these if they were profitable, right? We aren't seeing similar cuts by DL/B6 at JFK.

Well it would make sense to me to cut your least profitable routes ahead of expected operational challenges.

Exactly. I think that’s 90% of what everybody is going. I would like to see WN’s cuts.

Man, the cuts by AS at SFO just keep coming! Oh, wait...

So I’ve mentioned this before, but after the VP of network at AS left in NOV they have basically frozen these sorts of strategy changes until the job is filled. It still is not, but will be soon. I think SFO’s future is job one for the new person. So they are in a holding pattern.

This just reverses cuts from last week. AS has not made a meaningful schedule update in over a month. Something is obviously going on. Either something is wrong in their process or they are planning a big announcement.

Enilria, not to heap more on you, but do you think you could start including a link to the previous week's thread in your initial post each week?

I've just looked back:

2/17: last real update viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1415825
2/24: Added one LAX-DAL Sep-Nov
3/3: One small change to August ANC-SCC
3/10: no changes
3/17: One June change to ANC-DUT
3/24: no changes
3/31: just the SNA cut
4/7: just the SNA ADD

I bet AA was first to volunteer in order to not lose slots. I don’t see much of this stuff coming back.

Agreed on Norwegian. If you are talking about AA, I think they would cut the worst flying which is apparently JFK. Norwegian doesn’t really have a choice of what to cut except with the 787 now operating SWF-DUB.

AS did say only a planned 2% growth for this year, right? PAE is probably taking up some of that. We probably shouldn’t expect to see a lot of growth from them this year.

I wonder how much longer this route will last being that it is a "dead end" destination for AA.

No doubt this close in they are max related. However it shows that JFK is the weakest link. B6 and DL fly against them on many of these routes. It seems that AA is turning into the incredible shrinking airline in New York.

Indeed and look at all the slot squatting once the runway is back up and running again. At least they’re spreading it around instead of the old 20x/day Dash 8 PHL-LGA squatting.

Sure, some is PAE. But isn't part of the point of PAE to shift traffic away from overcrowded SEA vs. all of PAE being growth?

for D8, those are all Max related. They simply don't have enough planes. They are wet leasting an A330 to make the DUB-SWF runs for now. These routes will likely be back as soon as the Max is up and flying. Hopefully DY can hang on that long.
