1955 LAX pic: underground walkway?

Wed Apr 10, 2019 12:47 am

Is this an under-the-tarmac walkway? To where?

Lots more interesting pics in the guy's collection.

LAX has tons of underground walkways dating back to the 1960s. Some of them remain open. You can read up on the history of LAX terminal design here:

You ask ''To where''?

Can't you read signs lol

The sign clearly reads '' TO PLANES GATES 15 22 INCL''.

I'm just kidding with you but I'm sure someone will give more information unlike the photo on Flickr where there is no information whatsoever regarding the photo other than the caption stating it's an underground walkway at LAX 1955.

For such a unique photo you would have thought that the person who uploaded it onto Flickr could have at least described it better.

I have to admit that I do love Flickr for all the nostalgic photos, the site is a goldmine of nostalgia :-)

If this picture is indeed 1955, then we are talking about the previous facilities, from where the Eagle's Nest and some general aviation facilities are located.

This is basically "Google Satellite" from previous years. Type in LAX and it will show you years for which there are photographs.

Looking at 1952, the year closest to 1955 for which there is complete imagery, the facilities at the east end seemed to be geared for remote satellite operations, as I see multiple parking stands from three piers. The photo in question might support that this is how one accessed the gates from what I believe was a one-story building.

The other pictures in the set are great too!

Yeah, looking at the east end (where the high-numbered gates would be) there could be a short gap between the "satellite" and the terminal -- but what for? Too small for planes to taxi over it, and would they build an undergound walkway just to make things easier for baggage wagons?

Can't blame the guy for not explaining -- he found the pic, and he showed it to us, knowing nothing about it, and we can't criticise him for not knowing more than we.

Great collection of photos. The planes, clothes, hair...blast from the past. And the Aeroflot IL-62. The scary part is....the ground level outside of the terminals doesn't look much different than it does today except for the upper roadway above it.

You can see the 'walkway' here in this photo of a 1950s 'open house' at LAX. Look like it went under an access point for GSE

This is the LAX that I am most familiar with. This is the LAX of my childhood and it is truly missed!
