Delta Past Fleet (1985-95)

Aircraft Type - Registration - Ship Number

Airbus A310-200 N8**PA S/N 0**
Airbus A310-300 N8**PA/N8**AB S/N 0**
DC-8 N13**L/N8**E S/N 8**
DC-9 N12**L/N3**L S/N 2**
DC-10 N9**WA S/N 7**
MD-88 N9**D*/N99*D* S/N 9**/90**
MD-90 N9**D* S/N 92**
MD-11 N8**D* S/N 8**
B737-200 N3**D* S/N 3**
B737-300 N3**WA S/N 2**
B727-200 N4**D*/N5**D*/N***W* S/N 4**/5**
B757-200 N6**D* S/N 6***
B767-200 N1**D* S/N 101-114
B767-300 N1**D* S/N 115+
B767-300ER N1**D* S/N 171+/1***
L1011-1/200/250 N7**D* S/N 7** EA S/N 78*+
L1011-500 N7**D* S/N 75*+

Of course there were some slight variations, but the point is the first digit in the ship number always identified the aircraft.
I won't go into the current registration/ship numbering matrix at DL. I'm sure there is rhyme/reason to it but eludes me. For example, all the 737 series as well as all of the Airbus aircraft (widebody as well as narrowbody) have ship numbers that begin with 3 followed by three additional digits. I'm sure the second digit signifies the aircraft type. The 757/767 aircraft have all kept their ship numbering as well as the MD aircraft, with the 717 carrying the 9*** ship number designation.

I have an Excel file that covers almost all important countries that have a systematic, orderly registration system. China will never appear here, since all aircraft are registered randomly with no series whatsoever. Here goes.
