Did CO ever fly to JFK

Sun Apr 14, 2019 7:44 am

From looking at photos on database I found some rare photos of CO planes at JFK.

Did CO ever fly to JFK even though they have a huge fortress hub at EWR?

They even had IAH-JFK flights to feed some international flights.

Looking back at their route maps and former schedules on http://www.departedflights.com it appears that Continental Airlines never operated operated any scheduled routes from New York JFK but as you've pointed out there are several photos online depicting Continental Airlines aircraft at JFK.

Perhaps they were diversions from LGA or EWR?

When I was a younger lad I was given a book about JFK and it showed a Continental Airlines Boeing 707 at JFK that was taken in 1971 but as I grew up I realized that they hadn't even reached the new York area at that time so I assumed that it was a charter flight or a MAC flight.

I believe Continental Airlines initated service to the New York area in 1980 with EWR to DEN and IAH with IAD to DEN and IAH starting the year before in 1979, LGA to DEN and IAH starting in 1982.

The big expansion in the New York area happening with the purchase of Peoplexpress in 1987 and the start of build-up of the EWR fortress.

I worked for Continental Express, and we briefly flew CLE-JFK.

Co operated a DC 10 from JFK to HNL in the 80's. If you look at departed flights for the February '87 time table you can see the flight. I do not recall when they stopped the flight.

They definitely operated IAH-JFK circa early '00s, because I was on it.

Yes CO flew IAH-JFK in 00-01. But it was shelved after 9-11

Continental flew to JFK until the 90s that was before the EWR hub

They flew to Cleveland with turbo props in the early 2000’s

They flew to Houston much later than that… Until 2009 or so. This service was with a 737 and was started and stopped two times over the 2000s

The EWR Hub started in 1987, with the merger of Peoplexpress and New York Air. New York AIr had operations at JFK in 1987, so did CO.
in the 2000's CO express also flew to IAD out of JFK.

In the 1980s, CO flew out of the now demolished Eastern Airlines Terminal (Terminal 1 replaced it) to HNL, via LAX I think.

CO also flew from JFK to IAH and to CLE for a brief time in the late 1990s early 2000s.

They did indeed operate a nonstop to HNL from JFK. It did not operate daily and continued on to SYD I believe, or maybe AKL. CO did try to develop HNL into a Pacific Hub but the effort was short lived. From NY at the time the schedule was the most convenient with only one stop to Oceana. I was fortunate to fly the route a couple of times.

The flight was switched to Newark for the Northern Winter 1987 schedule. I flew AKL-HNL-EWR on 31 December 1987. My first new year for 1988 was over the Pacific and, after crossing the dateline, the second was as we were on final approach to EWR. My first view of New York was as the fireworks were going off. I’ll never forget that sight!

Right after the merger in 1987, the EWR flight operated daily, while the JFK operated 3 times a week. From JFK it was flight 15 and it continued to SYD on certain days and other days to MEL. In addition to this there were daily flights to MEX, TYS and other destinations.

CO flew IAH and CLE flights until soon after 9/11. It gave customers options to NYC when their flight had to involve a CLE or IAH connection anyway, as well as LGA. Ultimately it made no sense to keep JFK flights and LGA flights.

They took over EA's JFK-MEX flight at one point I believe.

It's true CO had a tiny footprint at JFK. CO stopped and restarted IAH-JFK several times. At one point they had it 4x a day to complete with B6. But they had stopped and started it again with 2x a day even before that. CO could never make up their mind if JFK was worth the time, ultimately it never lasted. Word on a.net was that flights were full but lots of low yield fares. At one point CO was hiring agents for JFK. For example, CO had early morning flights to IAH (like 6 a.m.) from JFK, IAH, and LGA.

Like CO actually trying HOU-EWR. Sounds cool but didn't work.

It was in 1987 I was at JFK and saw a CO DC10 land. I was quite surprised. Yes, I have the year right (gee I'm old). Too bad I didn't have a camera ready.

Yes, it's true, CO Express flew from JFK to CLE.

Some things in life fail no matter what. CO never really worked at JFK. And now UA has dumped JFK altogether.

Incorrect. I flew IAH-JFK in spring of 2006

A bit of trivia.
CO's largest cargo warehouse in the U.S was located at JFK. Since bulk of NYC freight forwarders were located near JFK, they would tender cargo to this facility from where it would be built up ready for loading on aircraft and trucked to EWR for departure. Opposite process on return.

According to T-100 data (which goes back to 1990), CO operated IAH-JFK from Sep 2000 to Sep 2008 and CLE-JFK from Jul 2006 to Sep 2008.

I only searched on the CO code so potentially there was other CO marketed, other carrier operated service, but I haven't done a deep dive into the T-100 data to see.

Yes, I do remember seeing Continental 737's at DL's Terminal 2 at JFK.

I flew DL out of JFK in 1999 and recall seeing a sign for Continental Express at the then new Terminal 1. I believe that was more consistent of a route than to IAH. It was flown on ERJs.

Looking at Departed Flights, USAir of all carriers had an actual presence at JFK in 1989 flying to Baltimore, Buffalo, Charlotte, Dayton, Norfolk, Pittsburgh, Richmond, Rochester, Syracuse and then dropped it entirely (can't recall when).

I remember that then AA attempted JFK in 2012 or 2013 IAH - JFK, which did okay.

Yes always thought it would be cool to be a CO cargo agent at JFK with no flights.. Just trucks to load

My first ever flight was on a Continental 747 from SFO to JFK. If I remember correctly, this was around 1999.

I believe the last iteration of CO at JFK was out of T4 (IAH mainline and CLE Express).

I hate to cast doubt, but CO’s 747s were retired or confined to the Pacific by the late 90s. If anything it would have been EWR-SFO.

Unless it was a one off charter perhaps?

Unfortunately, I didn't keep my original ticket and I may be wrong on the dates. My father bought tickets from a travel agency. The only thing I remembered was the flight was delayed overnight due to a storm and that CO still served a meal on the transcontinental flight.

We (Cal) had limited scheduled service into JFK over the years as stated

I did have to declare an emergency one night in an MD80 after a total oil loss in one engine and subsequent shut down

We diverted into JFK due to a thunderstorm over EWR and made an uneventful one engine landing

After fixing the problem the empty ferry flight to EWR was a short one !

I remembered back in 1980 when I was on Transamerica DC-8-61 and saw Continental AIrlines DC-10-30 pushback from the old National Airlines building and I forgot what terminal is that. This site is already torn down and built JetBlue terminal. Continental Airlines flight was for HNL on nonstop.

Definitely not. By then UA was just down to PS JFK-SFO/LAX and Express to IAD. Other than EWR, CO only flew from LGA to CLE/IAH and weekend non-stops to AUA of all places.

At the very end (I believe 2008), CommutAir was operating CLE-JFK on the Dash 8.
