HiFly temporarily replaces A330neo ops with A380 with Air Senegal

Sun Apr 14, 2019 8:02 pm

Air Senegal has brought in Hi-Fly Malta's Airbus A380 9H-MIP on its HC404 / HC403 Paris-Dakar service due to technical problems with its 5-weeks-old A330-900neo 9H-SZN (which is also operated by HFM for Air Senegal).

Trackable on FR24:

Looks quite interesting, let's see how the economics will run on this flight considering how it went as a nightmare for Norwegian due to external factors & problems relating to load factor with on their Gatwick to JFK service.

Ah, of course. If you have problems with a 330, a 380 is obviously the way to go...

What kind of issues? Engine-related?

I'm guessing the same, but nothing has come up regarding that.

: boggled:

Are A330/A340/777 so rare that they wet leased an A380? HiFly charges dearly...

Since HiFly is the operator of the A339 as well, this may be a simple equipment swap for them. Cheaper to fly an unused A380 than externally wet lease something smaller.

As far as I know, the delays out of JFK because of limited A388 capacity did cost them quite well, along with higher operating costs for the jet, and lack of premium pricing on the seats of their premium heavy aircraft

What is wrong with the 5 week old A330-900? Seems odd.

HiFly was flying an A340 for Air Senegal a couple months ago.

Apparently the airplane flew to Senegal and then back to Paris for more tests earlier this year.

They do? I'd think the market for a temporary 380 wet least would be tiny

Pretty sure it’s whatever SQ had on their A380s before their latest refurbishment.

As I recall they had plenty of premium seats available on those flights. Everyone was upgraded. I don't know anyone who was downgraded. This is the first I'm hearing of it. Obviously its never an ideal situation when you have to wet lease an aircraft. It also operated with signifigant delays the first week or so of ops, but I'm not sure it was anymore of a nightmare for them than usual.

As someone said earlier, since Hi-Fly is operating this route for Air Senegal, its easier to switch aircraft, then find another A330.

Finding another A330 may indeed have been difficult. With the number of Max aircraft out of service there are a number of unusual wet leases. Norwegian is using one to cover their SWF-DUB route.

It has F12C60Y399. Full SQ cabin, even their enclosed F class remains intact when SQ retired her.

Yes, HiFly A330 fleet are now all leased out:

A333 9H-AGU is leased out with Azores.
A332 CS-TQP is not in service.
A332 CS-TQW is leased out with Thomson Airways.
A332 CS-TFZ active with Sri Lankan.->They can lease this aircraft since it is not in regular use.

The last 339neo flight out of Dakar was cancelled as well,
so the return leg from Dakar will have passengers from 2 flights (delayed one and the scheduled one) onboard,
combined with other factors such as also HiFly operated; planes availability; costs etc, a 380 flight may make senses.

5M equipment change. The A339 is actually registered to 5M so that it can fly in the EU, but is owned by HC. The problem is there isn't a twinjet that can be swapped in, especially with the former CS-TFZ not in airworthy condition. CS-TFX might have been used, but parent 5K is trying to dispose of it.

What is the problem with their A339? TAP's fleet seems to be reliable.

I think CS-TFZ is with UL and they are not flying it for some reason. UL has mentioned they will try to lease it out as it has different cabin configuration compared to rest of UL's A332. HiFly can pick up few ex-KF A332 or EY A332.

Air Senegal A330Neo had a tech issue. There was also a strike, from Pilots (only a rumor according to some sources). Air Senegal A330Neo arrived this morning at Paris Cdg, from Dakar, with pax on board.

An airline replacing one of their tech aircraft with another aircraft of their own doesn’t make it random

Why is everyone making a big deal of this , it's a very clear swap by HiFly, yeah the A380 is special, but the reason is not weird.

They have to operate a A330-900 for Air Senegal, they can't, so they replace it with another plane from HiFly. Simple.

That would be a fun journey! I assume Dakar airport doesn't have any airbridges that can serve the A380?

They also had issues with gate space, Terminal 1 has limited 388 capable gates and this caused delays.

Right now, with LR contracted lift in high demand due to the MAX situation and dummer season approaching, you get whatever you can find.

I can’t imagine what the landing fees and ground handling costs at JFK are for the A380
