The Boeing 787: Broken Dreams l Al Jazeera Investigations

Mon Apr 15, 2019 2:09 am

Hello everyone,

I have not been on this site in a few years. I did a search for this documentary and nothing came up. With that being said please forgive me if this has been discussed already.

I came across the documentary below about the B787 some time ago. I find it hard to believe that all this is going on at Boeing. Does anyone know any facts about this documentary that disproves it, or has Boeing lost all senses?

It's a bunch of garbage. The 787 is a tremendous success. It had teething problems, but Boeing overcame them. They badmouth the South Carolina facility, but Boeing is no longer just a Washington state company. They moved their headquarters to Chicago after merging with McDonnell Douglas. They bought out Vought's facilities in South Carolina after they were unhappy with Vought's work on the 777 program. Boeing isn't going back to being a company that is just located in Puget Sound.

Technology and efficiency wise it is a success but will Boeing ever make a profit on this program ?

Probably. It's not like the a380, they have a ton of them on the orderbooks.

The documentary was made at the height of 787 grounding few years ago. It was viewed widely by public back then, and generated a lot of buzz in media. At that point of time, there were a lot of bad publicity around the 787 and I guess Al Jazeera rubbed salted into wound.

I think there was also a short documentary on 737NG, how its construction was mishandled badly, leading to several crashes which have identical fuselage breakage broken in few sections.

Worth remembering, in light of how the 787 is praised by airlines and customers today, how people were feeling about the 787 during the era of its troubles (which ran roughly from mid-2007, when it became clear that there would be major delivery delays, to the end of the grounding in April 2013).

Before EIS, we had plenty of people saying the plane would never enter service and would drive Boeing into bankruptcy. :ghost: After EIS, we had people refusing to fly on it based on the ZA002 shorting incident. After the battery incidents, people said that the fix was a sham and no one should fly on a 787 (disproven by two subsequent thermal runaway events where the new containment system worked as intended). The plane was a ripe target for sensationalistic media treatment, and this was an example.

Al Jazeera is a fairly reliable media outlet (except for stories directly involving Qatar) but all media outlets have a natural incentive to engage in this sort of behavior and do from time to time.

They do but the total development costs were astronomical, not as high as the A380
but whether they can make a true profit
is unknown at this point in time

However I think there’s still long term potential for another 1000+ orders, especially with a NG version and that should tip the program into the black

I'm pretty sure it's in the black as long as they keep their existing orders...

Total cost far outstripped the A380 cost.

The cost of development was between 25 and 30 billion USD.

The early deferred production cost reached over 30 millions. About 25 millions are still pushed forward and are waiting in inventory to be written to cost.

Well, estimates for the A380’s development are over 25 Billion

Why is this being rehashed from nearly five years ago?

And right there is why Boeing COULDNT make a 737 replacement in 2011

This topic was discussed extensively when the story came out. Since this story is a few years old, the thread will be locked.
