When did United Fully Phase Out Rising Blue?

Wed Apr 17, 2019 6:17 am

Anyone know when United phased out the Rising Blue livery, as well as which tail number was the last aircraft to have it?

On February 18, 2004, the "Rising Blue" (or "Blue Tulip") livery was introduced, intended to signal a fresh start once the company emerged from bankruptcy protection. It started being phased out with its merger with Continental. I would suggest a good dive for more information by using the web.

When??? Not a moment too soon IMO. Always reminded me of a bad water-color paint job that a 3rd grader would do.

Later than that.
IIRC, summer of 2011 when the contract MX was kicked out in MCO and CALMX took over the subUAL thruflights, there were Rising Blues still flying. One had a nasty paint removal over the right side around the overwing exits.

Most definitely. And not just on partner-operated RJs.

I definitely remember taking a picture of a UA B744 at FRA in the rising blue livery in the summer of 2013 waiting for a flight to LIS from the same terminal, should even have it saved somewhere.

I recall flying a couple 777 in battleship around the time of the merger. I can’t recall if it was pre or post PSS. They also sported the pre-IPTE seats. Flat in F but non-electronic recliner in J. Basically a lazy boy bolted to the floor.

Definitely later than 2010. I flew on N182UA on SFO-HKG on June 3, 2013. She was still in Rising Blue -- and she wasn't repainted until October of that same year.

N847HK (a Trans State ERJ-145) was the last plane in the rising blue when it was removed from service in March 2016 (went back in service this past January, obviously it was repainted). Unsure about Mainline, I think that was late 2013 or early 2014.

There was (is) a very lengthy UA repaint thread around here somewhere.

The merger closed in October 2010. At the time, about two thirds of UA’s fleet was in Rising Blue while a third was still in the Battleship colors. A lot of the A320s had fairly fresh coats of paint after Ted died in 2008.

Rising Blue was still around on the mainline fleet well into 2013. I remember seeing what I’m pretty sure was the last 747 in those colors at SFO in May 2013.

I saw at least one 744 (possibly two, but I cannot be certain) in those colors at SFO in August 2013, so Rising Blue was definitely still around in the 2nd half of 2013.

Well, I'm pretty sure N847HK was still flying with it in 2018 on the Express carrier side. So I'm willing to bet the last revenue united flight in that livery was flown by an express carrier.

It has been retired and stored since April 2016. But I am willing to bet that it is United and United Express's last plane that had the Rising Blue livery. As for United operated planes, I'm not sure.

I recall twice I’ve seen it, in the same year actually; on a CRJ7, and on the truth flight, a 747 in rising blue, at FRA... up close!. Didn’t take a picture ): (this was 2014)

I believe the final mainline aircraft to have Rising Blue was N655UA. Here's a photo of it from October 2014:

I saw N655UA at IAD around Thanksgiving 2014 still in the Rising Blue livery. I don't know when it was repainted but it would probably have been early 2015

N655UA. It lasted until late December 2014. A great livery that should still be here.

Many of us loved that livery at United but the reason for leaving it? The money it would have cost to repaint the Entire fleet following the merger, Aside from the fact that Glen Tilton couldn't WAIT to turn the reigns over to Jeff Smisek and Co. Who didn't want to let go of ANYTHING Continental. Which is probably why there are few S-CO's still around running United. They definitely didn't have any "Global View" as I found it amazing they'd come as far as they had..

Simply and blunt answer: The only thing that stayed United with the merger between the two was United as the name and 744’s weren’t immediately dropped plus they kept hub’s that’s it.

As a counterpoint, I thought it was one of the most beautiful liveries I've ever seen.

I liked it too but it didn't look great on the E145s when the paint started to come off around the nose (as it did on N847HK) I liked the color though and hope the new livery brings back some more shades and color to the fleet.

Sigh... I read this response and instantly knew it was you before looking at your username.

It's time to move on, it's been almost a decade and the airline now is in better shape than either sUA or sCO were on their own. The majority of us working there already have moved on, you should to.
