Delta 763 Retirement

Mon Apr 22, 2019 9:17 pm

Saw N140LL at KLAX today. Taking a look at its flight schedule, seems as if it was running regular pax service until yesterday, now a series of small hops between air force bases and the most recent leg to san bernardino. Everything I can find lists all of deltas non-ER 763s as retired..

Can someone explain this? I'm trying to learn a bit more about the retirement process, as I would assume that is the fate of this jet.

I would guess it is working charter flights, not retired.

From what I understand today is that birds last day in Revenue Service. It is being sent to the boneyard in San Bernardino (Southern California) These planes have had a long life with DL having been delivered in June of 1993.

The takeoff to SBD was real sporty, probably only 1/3 of the runway.

Great birds. First flew one SLC to DEN years ago. The winglets gave them new lives, aesthetically as well as operationally (not certain the non-ERs ever got winglets come to think of it.).

Thanks everyone...the takeoff was quite interesting to see. Glad to have caught the final flight of this aircraft!

I flew on the domestic 763s quite a few times over the last decade but mainly DTW-LAX, LAX-MSP-LAX, LAX-ATL-LAX and even a one off on ATL-EWR in September 2010. I never experienced an MX delay and I really liked the AVOD at each seat which was reliable.

It's funny how most of them were built between 1987-1991 when I flew them between 2014-2015.

The domestic 763s started leaving when the 321s arrived, right?
I have taken N140LL to and from LAX many times. My namesake aircraft ended up on timber at MZJ over the summer. Wondering if she has been completely cut up yet. I'd love a keychain out of the skin. Cmon, Delta... :D

I was on board N140LL on April 3, flying ATL-SLC as DL1986. She shows her age, but at least the IFE worked in my seat. :) I was surprised to see it in service, but I know it operated several flights for that week, at least.

Edit: Yep. It's game over for N140LL.

Only one 767 domestic left in service, N1402A. Currently running SLC-ATL-SLC for the next few days, then charters only until it is due for heavy maintenance.
This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.

An ATL-LAX-ATL rotation was added for the summer season recently. Not sure if this replaced SLC, or is an extension of service.

Delta’s 763 fleet never got winglets though, just the ERs.

Sad to see her go, only around 90,000 hours and 30,000 cycles. AFAIK there is no freighter conversion for non-ERs, so it’s parts time for these last two.

1402 will be gone in around the 1st of June. I think it's going to be strictly used for charters until that date.

My bad, the ATL-LAX-ATL rotation has switched to
D1 equipment. Should’ve double checked before I posted :). Thanks!
