Russia planning to build IL96-500T to transport oversized cargo

Reportedly, they wanted to build 16 IL96-500T within the time frame of 2026-2034 to transport oversized cargo. It is expected that Russian ministry of defense will take six of them and the CR929 project will use four of them, and then another six of them can be sold to other commercial customers.
The draft design is expected to be able to fulfill most tasks that are currently flown by the An-124 within Russia and thus replacing its role.

So they are going to take a 90 t midsize freighter, powered by four 757-class engines, and have it replace a 150 t high-wing heavy lifter? Good luck with that.

The replacement for the An-124 on most missions is the 747-8, which at least has comparable payload, although not comparable loading capability.

The presentation shows that only 1% missions currently flown by the An-124 actually carried more than 80t payload and thus the proposed IL96-500T can do the remaining 99% tasks, according to my understanding on the report

So this is the Russian version of the Beluga and Dreamlifter. Good for them! It's nice to see that the Il-96 is getting a second life after all. Geopolitical, I understand why Russia wants to get ride of Ukrainian built aircraft and not buying American/European counterpart for these projects.

The question is, do they need so many 150 t high-wing heavy lifters at all, if you check the proposal the 96 will be a 80t capable cargo aircraft, engineered for specific needs of the Russian space program and the MOD. Furthermore, the 747 is nothing close to the 124, as is is very limited on size of the cargo it can carry, the front loading of the 747 is limited to the height of 2.4m, side door cargo is limited in length and height, so de facto a 124 cannot be replaced by a regular 747 on the missions it was designed for. If this thing happens at all, there is a very long way to it, so it's possible that we will see a re-engined version as well.

Will there be a 2 or 3 flying crew member? What are the chance for an airline such as UPS, Amazon Prime, or Fedex to operate such a jet?

Well, the An-124 is not only Ukrainian built. It was designed in Kyiv by Antonov but built both in Ukraine (Kyiv) and Russia (Ulyanovsk). However, most importantly, the supply chain was scattered all over the ex-USSR, from Belarus to Uzbekistan. All these last years, there have been talks about restarting An-124 production in Ulyanovsk but this will not be an easy task for this last reason.

Box carriers usually don't ship oversized cargo through the air, so I would say no chance at all. Simply because it won't offer them anything more then a 767, 777 or 747 already can do for their operations.

I love these plans to resurrect old Russian designs. Airbus are building up to produce 60 A320s a month!! While here they are hoping to make 16 airframes over 8 years. Brilliant! I hope it comes true.
