United 747-100 at KIX

Thu Apr 25, 2019 5:51 pm

From browsing through some photos of UA´s 747-100 on the internet. I saw photos of them at KIX. Do you know where UA flew their 741s to from KIX?

I believe UA had KIX-GUM/SPN service in the 90s as well, maybe with 747s or DC-10s. I think MNL might have been in the mix, too. Besides KIX-SFO (742/777 at the time and continues today with 787), KIX-LAX had a 744 flight, and ORD had a nonstop 744 for a few months in 1998. KIX also had SEL flights for a short period of time.

HNL-KIX was at least 1x daily, and at times multiple daily with "rope start" 747 Classics, DC-10s, and finally 777s before it was pulled. UA had a pretty healthy KIX operation before the late 90s and the decline of the Japanese economy...

I recall UA flew GUM-KIX before they pulled of GUM totally.

United is still in Guam and they're still flying GUM-KIX.

That was inherited from Continental Micronesia in the UA/CO merger. sUA had dropped GUM years ago.

thread drift....

These 747-100s used to operate into SIN up to the 90s.. There were a few 200s but mostly everyone was flying 747-400s.

If that was one of the photos you saw, it says it right in the photo caption: "lining up for runway 34L at Osaka Itami bound for San Francisco as UA886"

I´m talking about this photo https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&source= ... 4023162547 of a UA 741 at KIX where could this aircraft be headed to SFO?

Interesting... that's N154UA, one of the 747-123's acquired from American. By 1997, all those birds had been converted into the high-density configuration of 42F/408Y. All domestic-style first class, no international first or business. Which, if I had to guess, means that plane was probably flying to/from HNL.

At the end of their service lives with United, the 741's flew ORD/SFO/LAX to HNL, as well as HNL-NRT and HNL-KIX. So, the plane in the photo is likely doing HNL-KIX or KIX-HNL, though it could always be a sub of some sort, and flying to SEL or SFO.
