Hmm..

looking at Flightradar, looks like the maybe started diverting to IND before landing at BMI, or maybe is was just trying to lose altitude.

A rescue plane just arrived from Chicago, expected departure is around 10:30.

United/Skywest no longer serves BMI (hasn't for around 10 years), I am guessing either the fine American or Delta regional employees at the airport are helping them out.

Another article I read says they initially were going to divert to Peoria, but ended up going to Bloomington instead.

Not a great look for COU after their recent publicity. I’ve flown this airport several times and personally have never experienced any issues but I’m sure this will cause drama within the community.

Correct the thread title SKW5288 is an E175 flight RIC-DEN. The correct flight number is SKW5228.

I was just thinking the same thing. Poor optics for Columbia MO air service which has been tarnished with sudden airport closure and now this mechanical diversion .Small towns , these incidents get a wider coverage and word spreads quickly.

Locals: "The service is unreliable, just drive." And then the service dies.

I 100% see what you are saying and i do think the general public thinks about flying like that. "Those small planes"......... Only thing you have to hope is this will leave their memories quickly, and local media moves on quickly.

E175 looks like a "real" airliner. Shouldn't affect public perception of the airport. (?!)

It was a CRJ-200. Those are bad enough on a good day.

Exactly.
Personally, of course I don't see the connection between a flight engine problem with the airport.
However, being from Columbia and being a long-time frequent flyer of theirs, I have witnessed first hand how ridiculous some folks in the community talk about the airport.

They associate the airlines with the airport. IE - anytime an airline cancels a flight due to, say, weather, they take to social media and start ripping on COU. Yes, COU has had their fair share of issues especially the recent suspension of flights due to their poor runway upkeep. But some of the flak they get from the public is pretty undeserving, in my opinion.

Take a look at their Facebook page and you'll see what I mean - https://www.facebook.com/FlyCOU/

I am interested to see if they'll make an announcement about it, a bit surprised they haven't already.

Honestly surprised this was such a popular news story. Fun fact, I'm the ops guy that was on duty that night. It was a long one, but I'm glad it all ended well.

It looks like a diversion to PIA was planned then it was determined to be too much of a backtrack. Then the aircraft looked like it was headed to CMI but instead diverted to BMI. CMI appears to have been IMC at the time while BMI was VMC, I wonder if that played a part. Also perhaps everyone at CMI had gone home for the night and they didn't want another RST situation (about 10 years ago an XE flight diverted to RST which was only staffed by XJ at the time, all the XJ employees had left for the night and nobody picked up their phone and the pax had to sit on the plane for like 6 hours - XJ ended up getting a huge fine and XE ended up with a medium sized fine).
