Flydubai could take Airbus jets if Boeing MAX grounding prolonged

https://www.thenational.ae/business/avi ... n-1.855076

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum: '“That gave me an option to talk to Airbus to see what exactly will happen because you have to understand until today we don’t have a definite date when this aircraft will be flying, I cannot just not do anything about it.”

Serious or just wants bigger compensation?

i mean the a320 is booked out for years. does anybody really think the max grounding is gonna last more than another few months? The patch has already been released to the oversight committee, and they said 90 days.

The issue might be about having a mix of aircraft types in the long run and being fully dependent on one type rather than getting an immediate replacement for the MAX.

How about an A220 order? From what I've seen, FlyDubai has a few routes with high yields yet low load factors. Heck, if the PW1200G/PW1700G aircraft were flying, there would be merit to look at those too.

At 2 or 3 aircraft a month, if they don't strike, that's booked out for years too.

And there’s the Norwegian order postponement.

I reckon they are an airline that would go for an aircraft which would enable rapid pilot poaching from OAL. Keeping this in mind, I doubt they would opt for the A220 family.

If push came to shove, I foresee them ordering A321Neos and A321NeoLRs. This aircraft in particular can open up a lot of African routes for them plus all of Thailand / KUL. The only 2 airports where the A321Neo can’t fly with a full payload in their network are KBL KTM and ADD.

I would have thought that if FlyDubai talked seriously to Airbus and met their sales people with $$$ in their pockets Airbus will do whatever it takes to get them new planes much earlier than what the present production backlog is.

EK pushed them towards the MAX because they did not want them to have the 321NEO in their fleet, for risk of Cannabilizing existing EK routes.

10/60 aircraft in their fleet are MAX which were used on longer routes where they probably needed it to improve their overall performance. No wonder they are angry and are threatening... who wouldn't?

Exchanging entire MAX10 order only for A321Neos can be a realistic possibility

Maybe the industry as a whole is slowly rethinking it's '1 type' phylosephy? Airlines are nowadays maybe too dependant one one type and are realizing they are vulnerable and exposed when something happens. A mix of 50 or so A321Neo (incl LR's) would be ideal. Their current MAX 8's and A321Neo's for the long stuff or where they need capacity. Average sector time at flydubai is between 3-5hrs currently acc to CAPA. DXB is slot restricted and DWC is a long time away. So flying an A321Neo with 179 seats vs 737 MAX 8 with 166 seats in a dual class layout will provide extra capacity. If you look at single class it's 240 vs 197, if they opt for MAX 8 200's that is. If I were them I'd swap the 50 MAX 10's for A321Neo's.
