Bangalore and Yangon being fully handed over to SQ/MI makes sense. Strong business / premium demand to those destinations.

Quanzhou? They cannot compete with MU?
And all those secondary Chinese cities moving from SQ to Scoot are also interesting in the sense that why weren't they moved earlier...
Cancellation of the Male route will probably make it possible for SQ to command a higher premium?
For the HNL route - That's the SIN-KIX-HNL tag on? Probably they lose out to AirAsia?
It's pointless to attempt winning internet debate.

Why didn’t they try SIN HKG HNL?

HNL and MLE are not surprising. If you are a cost conscious traveller looking for a beach holiday from Singapore, Bali/ Langkawi/ Phuket make much more sense

I guess back then, they were yet to be fully integrated (SQ/MI and TZ/TR) hence they moved when the group strategy is clearer. Notwithstanding they also need to request to change with local authorities in those countries.

I think not having a local partner in Japan made their KIX-HNL a hard sell. AirAsia X has Rakuten in distribution of products and service. Moreover, AirAsia has domestic operation there, although different base. DJ at Nagoya D7 flies into Osaka Kansai.

I wasn’t sure if airlines are only allowed one fifth freedom from HK.

The Japanese have an affinity to Hawaii, but it's unserved from HKG and could be a very interesting opportunity.

Yes, it was announced that they'll end that route for awhile. And yes, that's b/c they cannot compete with AirAsia X (Who is going daily on that route) on the low-cost side.

The HNL flight catered to Japanese mostly anyway, instead of Singaporean.

As for MLE - right now SQ, MI, AND TR all fly to MLE. It makes sense to "consolidate" that to SQ and MI. Maldives in general is not a cheap destination anyway, and thus, the yield is there for higher-end leisure traffic.

Indeed. While it's an interesting market (and HNL is the top unserved market from HKG), it's not like HKers in general are flocking to Hawaii anywhere near the rate that Japanese (or even South Korean) are. There are many places to pick from for "higher end" leisure destination (Maldives is a popular one, Bali is also one of the "higher end" beach destination for HKer. For more exotic traveler they can even head to places like Fiji), while cost conscious traveler just head to Thailand (like everyone else) or even Vietnam...well, for even more cost conscious traveler there's Clear Water Bay :duck: :duck:

I wonder how ATH and TXL are doing. Pretty relieved not to see them on the list of suspensions.

I read some time ago that Athens is performing really well and it even received extra frequencies in W2018/9. I think it was mentioned their LF was 85%.

And people from HK need visa to Hawaii, combined with high living costs and relatively low services quality,
basically we have no point to go Hawaii without special purpose.
We have plenty of substitutes of beach destination from low end to high end.

But Hong Kong can't even sustain a daily LCC service to Guam on top of UA's less than weekly service

Guam isn’t Hawaii. False equivalence

Adding on - I've yet to hear any honeymooners (Which is as "special purpose" as it gets) or some HK celebrities vacationing in Hawaii in general.

Is the demand zero? No. But can "budget carrier" make that route work? No. The cheapos are not going to get a visa (B/c that cost money), go to Hawaii only to have to spend a ton on everything from hotels to foods, etc., while the high-end leisure traffic are just not there (There are just many other choices as hongkongflyer said).

While you're at GUM - HKers doesn't need visa to go to GUM (and SPN), either. Even that market is tiny, though, and this is with Guam and Saipan being advertised as beach destination since I was in primary school in HK.

and people go GUM for certain international exams as GUM is the nearest USA territory from HK
