Hello there Turkish Aviation fans,
What a difference a month makes!!!
Last month today we were not sure if there would be a “BIG MOVE” to the new airport in a week’s time, today we have very smoothly transferred, functional Istanbul Airport.
Finally, congratulations to this move and to TK at its new home and to Istanbul residents for their world class airport.
I have done a New York-IST roundtrip, Spain-IST roundtrip and tomorrow I will do a DLM-IST and mostly pretty pleased at this early stage of this airport. There will be additions, improvements for many more years to come, but even today it is miles ahead of the Ataturk airport.

I will add a few other points and let you share your views, news, photos, rumors and experiences:

-First TK 787 due for roll out of final assembly on the 15th of May !!!!!! And speaking of TK787s, my whole crew on my last TK 777 flight said they got their training for the 787 and would be flying both.
-Here is the latest update for TK’s 787 operations for next summer from routesonline:
Istanbul – Boston eff 29MAR20 787-9 replaces A330-300, 1 daily
Istanbul – Cape Town eff 29MAR20 787-9 replaces A330-300, 5 weekly in Northern summer 2020 season
Istanbul – Havana – Caracas – Istanbul eff 29MAR20 787-9 replaces A330-200, 4 weekly
Istanbul – Montreal eff 29MAR20 787-9 replaces A330-300, 3 weekly
Istanbul – New York JFK eff 29MAR20 787-9 currently scheduled once a week in S20, TK011/012 on Day 4 (787-9 scheduled as daily 09MAR20 – 28MAR20)
Istanbul – Washington Dulles eff 29MAR20 787-9 currently scheduled on 2 of 7 weekly flights (Day 14) in S20 (787-9 to operate Washington service on daily basis from 08AUG19)
-It is going to be a nice change not to talk about if TK would ever choose between 748/380 or what is the latest on the 3rd airport :)
-AFAIK, TK has 12 x 737MAXs sitting and 6 more waiting to be delivered. That is a pretty big capacity unused.
-There is a lot of new Turkey-China service to commence, fingers crossed.
-If anyone know anymore on the issue about the TK A330 fleet, to stop and cool brakes before take-off, please chime in.
-And finally, looking at IST, there is so much space on the tarmac and between actual gates; one could assume all gates could handle WB aircraft at the same time. Can we speculate on that?
-Rumors of TK to cancel the remaining 737MAX and getting more 787s??

Thank you and welcome friends.
Bon Voyage to all :)

With the continued grounding of 12x 737 Max's will this affect TK's profit and capacity in any way?

I'm pretty sure the 787 will also fly to Bali, right? Or have they changed the aircraft?

2 ex Wow A333 is joining TK fleet soon. These planes was supposed to be taken by TK after Skymark never taken it up. But it was never taken up and was subleased to Wow in 2015.

Happy spring all gentle women and gentlemen
TK had plans for +20 737 max in 2019 so due to grounding # of passengers and profit for sure will be declined
A332 is an other story : as per investor presentation , we will see gradual departure of leased 332s, 5 will be leave in 2020, i expect freedup 333s after arrival of 789 and 359 take some rgional missions pf 332s but 5 owned and aged(refurbished) ER s will stay but i am not sure where they will be deployed since 789s will gradually replace them (havana, bogota etc)
Cancellng max order is a a rumor but it says for 10 frames, so it does not make sense if it is due to max issues.
Boeing executives visited and presented 797 to Atlas and TK in April, i expect a good order from TK
I would like to hear about new longhaul new routes or frequency increase after arrival of 789/359, can anybody share toughts, rumors or speculate

Apparently Pegasus is launching SAW-RAK for winter season. That will be PC's 4th destination in the UAE after AUH, DXB and SHJ.

Saw the plane at IST today, it was nice to see another Chinese airline at IST.

I talked to some of the ground staff today, one wheelchair operator said that they cannot cope with the demand because everyone who doesn't want to walk the distance is requesting one.

It took me four hours to get to Kadikoy from the airport, rather frustrating.

Nope, we cannot!

15 of the 77 gates (most are L and R gates, though) can only accommodate only NBs. These are: B2, C1, C2, C3, C4, D1, D2, D3, D4, D5, E1, E2, E3, E4, F1,

Of the 62 remaining gates, 25 can handle either one WB (serviceable thru both 1L & 2L doors) or one NB. 37 gates are M.A.R.S. types where they can dock either a WB (inc. 380 or 748) or 2 NBs. 4 of the 380 compliant gates have the third jetway for the upper deck. So a max. of 62 WB frames can be docked, but not 77.

on selected days in May, XQ will be deploying Wamos Air 747-400 on flights from/to AYT.
first flights are scheduled from CGN and DUS on 4/5 May; apparently FRA/ZRH is also planned, but nothing scheduled so far.
according to Wamos webpage, their 744 has a 529 seat configuration. thats a lot of seats, pretty similar to the Russian 744's.

I posted about this at the end of April thread as well. I know its more than $ for Boeing to keep orders and vote of confidence for the Max, however if you know Turks and I’m talking about non av-geek Turks, there will be drama at the stairs etc seeing the Max logo on the plane. Even some av-geeks are reluctant. TK would be smart to swap the 737’s for 787’s.
This action with it brings a load of issues, would Boeing allow this bad pr? What would TK do with The remaining Max’s, I think issue is very delicate for both sides.
Having said that I believe with all the issues fixed and tested Max will live to be very successful, the public perception of it will take a long time IMHO.

Not only that but I am sure newspapers would start writing stories about passengers refusing to board a MAX plane. This is definitely PR TK does not need. That said, I am not superstitious but I would do my best to avoid flying on MAX.

New branding at TK. We have seen parts of this months ago in one of our threads. I really like this. I imagine they will all replace the blue lettering on airplanes with black and the font itself.
On the other hand, I am not sure about this dark color scheme of Business Class, with enclosed seats. It might feel pretty dark IMHO, especially when at gate and on tarmac and at night or when window shades down. I hope they have done some VR presentations and got some feedback from real pax.

I'm eating crow. I fully admit I expected more issues with the new airport. Kudos to the team.

Now to expand! ;)

62 docked widebodies would be amazing. I do not see that need. But it is good future planning.

Lightsaber

I do actually like this new cabin. It looks very professional and premium. I guess it depends on personal preference some will love it some will hate it but that goes for everything.

Me too. And I posted many times that I would stay away from it for sometime. But duty calls and I was there less than a week after the transfer. I am about to get on a plane right about now and will be landing at IST for the 3rd time since. Very smooth transition and I had an option tonight to fly to SAW or IST even though I stay on the Asian side and I chose IST. Just for the better experience and a chance to fly on a Wide Body domestically. I will deal with the land traffic once on ground :)

It is very professional and premium looking, I agree. I like the color combination of Gold and Black, very opulent :)
I just think, it might be too dark with all the window seats that have all the hardware to make it more private on 787s. Compare that to the window seats on 77Ws. Every window seat, like Row 3 A and K have 3 window seats wide open to that whole row and that makes the Business Cabin so airy.

RAK stands for Ras al Khaimah whose airport code is actually RKT.

Exactly, I meant RKT; I mixed the airport code with the abbreviation for the Emirate :) I imagine this is subsidised by the Ras al Khaimah government. They are trying to bring European tourists to their resorts.

I checked only for August 2109. It seems that Dreamliners will fly only to Antalya (AYT), and not to Izmir (ADB). A morning flight and return everyday and an early evening flight and return on some days (if 789 will not be operated a 77W will, on this one...)

European carrier based at AYT???? There's the Corendon based at AYT, and there's also a 2nd Corendon (Holland) which is close relative of Corendon but not registered in Turkey. It's like Sun Express and Sun Express Germany.

I certainly hope they won't replace the blue lettering on airplanes with black. The font is nice. But the black? Looks more like something you would do in the aftermath of a tragedy.

So, last night, TK sent an A333 instead of a 77W to DLM.
About DLM; so they are definitely using the new terminal by YDA for both DOM and INT traffic and what used to be the International terminal sits empty. I have no idea what are the plans for that terminal. I thought it will be turned into the Domestic terminal but what I can see from outside.... they took out the TK lounge, and the entrance looks abandoned, lights off..
The new terminal is quite bigger. There were only two Russian NBs present and a few business jets at DLM.
This was my first time on one of those Skymark 333s, TC-LOG; with 40C 265Y seats. It is a shame there were only 2 of us in the Business section. The seats were the usual Business seats in European Narrow Body fleet, no seat back IFE, 3 big screens by the bulkhead.
It was a perfect night to fly, hardly any bumps, umlimited visibility. Perfect views of SAW, the Boshporus and IST.

https://flightaware.com/live/flight/THY ... /LTBS/LTFM

Touch down: 10:02pm
Taxi to F17: 10:20pm
Bus ride to Terminal: 10:22pm
In a taxi by: 10:30pm (no luggage, IST to Levent taxi fare: 117TL (around $20)
If you are going to pay with credit card, tell the taxi bosses and they get you a taxi with a POS machine.
Not sure why we were at gate F17 but still got bussed to the terminal?? But it was definitely faster.

That's not surprising: DLM-IST is a domestic flight but that A333 you came along will most probably get allocated to a new international flight, docking at F17. So they first de-planed all the domestic pax and bussed you to the terminal and after that the A333 must have docked to F17 for its next ongoing (international) flight.

It's not a very pro-looking practice, but it has to be that way for years to come and I also agree with you bussing to the terminal definitely takes shorter...

Indeed that particular A333 (TC-LOG), took the IST-BEI service, dept. at around 01:00 a.m. on 3rd May (today's morning). Flight Aware cannot (unfortunately, for the time being...) cannot indicate the departure gate information.

There obviously are no foreign airlines based at AYT, however foreign airlines do have crews based in Turkey. In previous years several European airlines and CIS carriers created seasonal crew base at AYT to support the large volume of flying. This likely still occurs.

I flew with TC-LOG nearly 2 years ago on JED-IST and onwards with TC-LOE to FRA :D

my Elite status with TK got renewed in March, requested the new card via their online tool now for the 5th time, but still no sign of the new card.
got into discussion in some US and Asian airports as some didn't want to recognize the digital card in the TK app.
called their hotline yesterday and this guy is seriously telling me that their have a "technical problem" issueing new cards. I asked him "for 3 months now?" which he stupidly answered with "yes". common, a "technical problem" (if there is any at all?!?) wouldn't last for so long.

any other ideas how I could get the new card?

I was extremely lucky flying with TK the last couple of years with special liveries and aircraft. As I sad I flew with Deli Mike, but I also had the pleasure to fly TC-JRO A321 with the Euroleague special livery and also with TC-JYP 737-900ER with the turkish national football team livery at that time. And of course the Star Alliance A332 TC-LNB :D

IAD, ORD, LAX and SFO (may be MIA too) will be 10 weekly in 2020 summer schedule. All additionals will be 787, IAD and ATL will be pure 787.

my Elite status with TK got renewed in March, requested the new card via their online tool now for the 5th time, but still no sign of the new card.
got into discussion in some US and Asian airports as some didn't want to recognize the digital card in the TK app.
called their hotline yesterday and this guy is seriously telling me that their have a "technical problem" issueing new cards. I asked him "for 3 months now?" which he stupidly answered with "yes". common, a "technical problem" (if there is any at all?!?) wouldn't last for so long.

any other ideas how I could get the new card?

Same here, my cards expired since February. No new cards yet but have not had any problems so far, fingers crossed.

TK will fly to KUL with the 787's from May 2020 onwards, replacing the current 330's.
I'm rather curious about the pax ex on board the 787's, can't wait to try it out.

From late June 2019 TK will introduce daily Sabiha-Erbil flights operated with the A320. I guess adding flights from SAW makes much more sense now when the new IST is so far west.

For work reasons I travelled near IGA for the last week or so; everyday. Since there is no metro system and such, the traffic can look very strange at times. Last night around midnight 80% traffic were buses by "ALTUR" and "TUREX", I imagine carrying personnel during shift change. It is a strange look to be on a 3-4 lane highway and all you see is white buses. The rest is HAVAIST buses, giant construction trucks and cabs.

If EU majors were smart they would add frequencies at SAW, most people that favored IST over SAW are flying from SAW instead of IST. Clearly you won't have the destination depth of IST but SAW became the easy to get to airport even though from my house in Ulus it takes about the same time it takes to get to new IST compared to Ataturk. The distance is more but there is no traffic. I think SAW is congested currently, but after the runway construction I think they will be growing very fast.

Depends on where you want to get to. If you have a specific location, I can tell you the time.

It depends on where you are staying and what havaist stop is the closest to you. If you are on the European side I would go from the Mecidiyekoy stop which will take 60minutes according to their website. But Basaksehir Metro is actually the closest I could find, which takes 40 minutes, but then again Ive never been to this metro stop, so I dont know how easy it is to get there from the coast line. Mecidiyekoy or even Taksim is probably your safest choice. From the Asian side I personally would travel from Kadikoy. I think those are the most popular choices.

Any helicopter service from the new airport to Taksim/Kadıköy?

(In other words, I'm also curious about when the direct train will be completed)
