United Starts DEN - FRA today (5/2)

Thu May 02, 2019 2:25 pm

United is starting their year-round Denver - Frankfurt service today using a 787-8. It will be interesting to see the impact on LH's 747-400 service which departs roughly 2 hours later each direction.

Any thoughts on what United (or any other international carrier) will add to Denver next? The A concourse expansion is underway and in roughly 2 years the airport will have a lot more international gate capacity.

I think both will coexist just fine. With large hubs on both ends, there is enough feed to support a daily FRA flight on each metal.

These airlines (I thought) had an immunized joint venture agreement. At the very least, they are Star Alliance partners and code share. I don't think this will hurt Lufthansa.

Agreed I would assume United would have done their homework and also would have plenty of data on the route before making the decision to fly. They should exist just fine

Indeed they do; metal-neutral JBA over the North Atlantic routes. This flight is part of that agreement and should not be a surprise for LH.
Keep calm and wash your hands.

this flight isnt a surprise to anyone at LH. The trans-atlantic flights are discussed between the airlines before they announce them.

5 daily non-stop flights from DEN to Europe on Star Alliance (and associates) during peak season is quite impressive. I wonder if DEN gets the non-stops to Dublin on Aer Lingus and/or to Istanbul on Turkish. . .

Well atleast they both now have a similar J products...you're just paying for a different level of service. If i wanted to book a J/Y seat, i'd go with UA since its more comfortable being on the 788. For you avgeeks, the 748 upper deck is a win!!!

Yes. They flew it for one summer in the mid 2000s on a 772.

Summer 2001. Stopped mid-October, presumably due to 9-11.

Oh wow. I didn't realize it was that long ago. Thanks for the clarification.

LH flies the 744 out of DEN not the 748. It was recently reconfigured with the J / Premium Y / Y compared to the previous F / J / Y setup. Now you can get upper deck J instead of only F (when they used to have the separate bed and chair on the upper deck F).

They don't compete. The UA flight was added to increase capacity to meet demand in a successful market. The 787 is a better fit for the second frequency, in terms of capacity and performance, than the generally larger metal (A346, A359, 744) LH has historically operated to DEN.

The timing of the flight opens up some different city pairs and more schedule options to destinations beyond both DEN and FRA, which comprises a lot of traffic on the route.

So is this a route revival?

Personally, anything that is gone for more than a couple years is "new" again. In this case UA is a new entity vs when it was served before and the previous service was so limited that I don't really think there is much sense in calling it anything other than "new".

Agreed.

And having an aircraft better suited to the route, especially when complimenting LH's 744 already existent 744 service, is new, too.
