A gathering of ex UA Express Dash-8s

Sat May 04, 2019 12:06 pm

Caught this group of former UA Express Dash-8-300s at the Cougar Helicopter facility at YHZ (Halifax) A check of one registration: N838CA shows the owner as Wells Fargo Trust-Trustee, Salt Lake City. Who was the original operator? They’ve been here for awhile….wonder what their future is?

Looks like CommutAir. Looks like they used that registration twice since it appears that in 2005 and earlier, N838CA was a B1900D. Still CommutAir, but under Continental Connection.

I had assumed Chorus/Jazz had acquired those either for replacement of higher time frames or as parts for the rebuild program... But they have been there for weeks now if not longer... YHZ Seems like a horrible choice for aircraft storage?

I saw those parked back on Feb 18. No idea what their fate will be.

Seems to me YHZ is a good jumping off point for airplanes headed downrange to, say, a new life in Africa?

Sure but leaving them sitting at a cold very wet airport for 3 months? Seems like that's not the idea.

One has not moved in over a year!
Can someone please start a wikipedia list of failed startup airlines? I am interested in seeing just how long it would be...

There's one that has been sitting in YYZ on the North ramp for months as well. They're probably connected in some way.

I've been told that one now belongs to one of the schools and will be moved to an off airport location this summer Along with the CRJ that is there with it. I actually thought it was going to the new Seneca School of aviation center they just opened but apparently not.

It's a 200 anyways I beleive, less interest from airlines...

YHZ is far enough inland that corrosion might not be a hugely serious concern, but still moreso than at an airfield in a more arid location.

But those are definitely former CommutAir aircraft; they were the only UAX partner to recently operate the smaller Dash-8s (Republic operated Q400s until a couple years ago).

Pretty sure the elevator flaps on 839CA aren't supposed to point in opposite directions like that, though.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

Thanks to the OP for posting this, I’ve meant to post the same question every time I drive past the airport.

I had always assumed they were for spares. Jazz does some maintenance here, but not sure if there are any 300s around here anymore.
