Updated: Aeroflot 1492 SSJ100 fire at Moscow (SVO) - 40+ confirmed dead

Sun May 05, 2019 4:03 pm

Hard to tell what or who, but looks like a substantial fire.

https://www.rt.com/news/458436-plane-fire-moscow-svo/

Edit: Confirmed reports it’s an Aeroflot SSJ1 that burst into flames after an “emergency” landing.

Looks like main landing gear collapsed on touch down. The aircraft is sliding on the runway with a nose up attitude, probably because of the nose landing gear.

I believe it was on fire before it even touched down which was the reason for the return to SVO.

It's possible, thus the situation was exacerbated by failing landing gear or even a sort of belly landing. We'll know at some point what happened.

Looks like they might have turned it into the wind to have the flames blow backwards and it looks like engine #2 is still putting out thrust based on the flame patterns?

I saw the video on twitter before coming here, it really made my heart sink!! I'm glad it seems everyone made it out, the flames are incredible. I'm glad the front doors were clear of the fire.

I don't know what to believe in terms of initial reports on what was going on, but if they really did survive a fire like that middair I think this may have been the best possible outcome. Regardless of later findings, props to the crew for the evacuation. Will be hoping for the best.

Wow, glad there are no fatalities. I find it strange that, at least on the videos I saw, it does not seem like they were met by any fire engines?

This is what pilots get paid for. They don't go to training to learn normal procedures, but fires, failures, loss of controllability etc..

may be we spoke too soon. according to latest news, there are indeed some fatalities :(

I think this makes it more important to know where the fire crews were? as I understand, they did know, the plane is coming back with an emergency!

I was just writing this...the second video is 48 seconds and starts after the 'plane has landed and come to rest. This means the end of it is at least three minutes after the emergency call, followed by an emergency landing with a 'plane on fire. How is it possible that no emergency crews are present/fire being put out in any of the videos??

Based on raw data and some guesswork....

SU1492 SVO-MMK (Moscow-Murmansk) took off at 15:03 UTC, climbed to FL100 and immediately initiated descent & return to SVO.

After a dummy approach at ca 2,500ft, orbited once and came back in to land at 15:31 UTC.

Pure conjecture here; the initial approach and orbit was either because they came in too fast/high at the first attempt, or... possibly to allow the tower to visually check if their undercarriage was down. Note that this initial approach was aborted some km short of the airport perimeter, but probably within binocular range for limited visual inspection.

Note; after the first approach, during the 360deg orbit, two other flights were cleared to land in front of it. This does not suggest the aircraft was already on fire.
Nothing to see here; move along please.

The footage is scary. It seems like the aircraft was engulfed in flame even before the wheel touched down. Such accident doesn't do SSJ any justice which is already suffering from embattled reputation. Hope conclusive report will be done soon enough to find the cause.

Hope everyone got out alive and well. God speed. Too early to call all are safe....:(

Not really. Mostly just the engine and spare parts availability (mostly for the engine).

Many sources are reporting one dead. I mean as sad as it is you can't really be surprised considering the footage. Regardless the fact that they got almost everyone out is a miracle.

Perhaps an uncontained engine failure caused this? I can't really imagine many other things that would cause such a blaze. I guess only time will tell. Also I don't get why we have to assume immediately it's the plane's fault. Once again people are jumping to conclusions. Just because there are spare parts issues doesn't mean the design is bad

It'd have to be a failure to the point that it turned the wing into Swiss cheese for a fire that big.

Very nasty, hopefully the casualties are kept to a minimum - although the black smoke suggests that the fire was well-established.

well, you can also have a very hard landing that's followed by landing gear collapse, resulting in fuel tank or fuel lines being ruptured, fuel leaking out and being ignited by sparks or engines heat

Earlier I've posted a quote I found on twitter that said "electrical system failure". Don't know how trustworthy is the person though.

You're right that the front-half was not in flames as it stopped, but I was referencing the twitter link provided by Scarebus of the plane landing.

Scary to see so many flames whilst the aircraft is still in motion. Must have been horrific to be taken for a ride in that situation whilst needing to wait for the craft to stop moving to evacuate. Hoping the initial reports of no fatalities are accurate.

If an aircraft is making emergency landing it's among standard procedures for ATC to call fire department. Crews don't have to ask for it. Along with giving it the first priority and diverting others while stopping departures.

One thing for sure it's a myth that back of an a/c is safer than front.

They were too far away from the tower to visually inspect the gear. Usually that’s accomplished by a low pass, they were nowhere near the field when they went around.
