Delta Airlines Long Haul Routes

Tue Aug 31, 1999 1:52 am

Since Delta decides to sell all of its B777-200 to AA and replace MD-11 gradually, what will Delta use to fly on long-haul routes ? I am wondering if B767-400ER is a replacement ...

Any comment / info / or idea ? Thanks

From my knowledge, the 767-400 is to be a replacement for Delta's aging L-1011 fleet. They will also use it on the more high density Atlantic and South American routes, and shift the MD-11's back to Pacific routes.

As a mechanic for Delta Airlines the 767-400 will be used to replace the 777 fleet. Delta originally did order the plane to replace much older L-1011s but the plane will be used to also operate on 777 flights and MD-11 flights when those are replaced around 2005-2010. Delta isnt sure yet when it will retire the much criticized MD-11.

After Delta's pilots lose their demand for $250,000 a year to fly the 764, DL will be forced to defer -400 deliveries to Continental. In order to satisfy their long haul requirements, DL will bring the back the bulk of their mothballed L-1011 fleet from the desert. For the routes that the L-1011 can't reach, DL will buy MD-11's back from FedEx, and have them returned to passenger configuration. Interesting enough, DL's long haul fleet will still be an average of 10 years younger than Northwest, which will be flying 40 year old DC-10's.

To my mind, Delta will order 777 again, soon or later. They can't fly Tristar, B767 and MD-11 much longer.

They do need the triple 7.

Delta Airlines Officals have informed me that the 777's will be reordered in mass numbers once the pay is settled. The MD-11's will be in the fleet as long as they are still safe to fly. The 767-400ER is due to be delivered in less then 6 months and will be operating domestic service at first then spread to Int'l service.
