Interjet drops 8 routes, focus more on South America

Mon May 06, 2019 6:39 pm

Interjet has announced it will phase out four Mexico-United States routes and four within Mexico as part of a restructuring plan.

The airline said that route changes will begin on May 11 with the discontinuation of the company’s Mexico City-Aguascalientes flight. Service between Los Angeles, California, and Puerto Vallarta, San José del Cabo and El Bajío will end on June 5, as will the Mexico City-Ciudad Obregón route. Cancún-New York flights will be discontinued on June 17.

At the same time, the airline is turning toward South America for further growth. The first of the new routes, from Mexico City to Medellín, Colombia, will begin operating on June 5, followed by Cancún-Medellín on June 6, Cancún-Lima, Peru, and Mexico City-Guayaquil, Ecuador, on June 17 and Cancún-Guayaquil on June 21.

For their sake hopefully, Latin America yields are higher than the low fares U.S. routes were generating.

Interesting this is only days after announcing their expanded partnership with AA. Would have expected that LAX could have been an important connecting city for such.

New CEO making his moves. With background from Viva Colombia he probably has insight into South America opportunities.

LAX-PVR currently has four carriers from the U.S: Southwest, American Eagle/Compass, Delta, and Alaska. LAX-SJD adds UA to the race, and AA upgrades to mainline, JFK-CUN has JetBlue, American, and Delta on the route, as well as EWR-CUN on UA.

That's a LOT of competition. And that's an awful lot of American-based leisure-traffic full of frequent flyers earning miles on their vacation. And unless InterJet is significantly less expensive than all others, most Americans will choose their home carrier before a Mexican carrier.

LAX-BJX has AeroMexico (Connect) and Volaris on the route. Another route that's going to be very price-sensitive, and I doubt InterJet has the ability to poach the higher-paying customers on this route.

Yikes! Get those planes on more profitable routes ASAP!!

Good for Interjet!

Maybe interjet should focus on shorter stage length Latin routes...MEX SAP, MEX TGU come to mind. Routes like GYE use up a lot of aircraft time

Interjet needs to focus on becoming a proper LCC and hopefully the new CEO and make the transition. Running A320 with mere 150 seats is not a recipe to make money on peanut fares. Look at how JetBlue learned it needed to densify its A320 over the years.

Do the LAX drops have anything to do with their partnership with AA?

Do you think the DL/AM JV has hurt them on routes out of DL hubs like the LAX-PVR, LAX-SJD and JFK-CUN flights?

The topic when the route expansions were first announced had many people explaining this was going to be successful, that the American change in policy to be more hostile to visa holders and immigrants was "fake news" and just wait and see... well.... we're waiting...

AS also announced it will be cutting SNA-SJD/PVR, so some noticeable cuts in the SoCal-Mex market. Should help out the existing carriers improve their yields.

I'm not sure many Californians even know who Interjet is, so the leisure markets are going to be hard for them...better off letting AA fly it if they are going to codeshare on it.

Interjet was a relatively, nearly completely unknown brand image in Southern California. Hopefully, new leadership will find a sustainable way forward for them....
