""The plane was pretty much written off," Wright told CBC Toronto."

How is a policeman in a position to say that?

Kind of odd. The damage is in the front, yet the fuel truck is in the back?

Look at that propeller. And the tarmac is wet. It's like the plane and the truck danced with each other.

I'm also confused as to why the fuel truck is by the tail, even though it hit the front of the plane.

From the damage I'd guess front of truck hit nose, spin hit prop and back of truck spun into tail. The front of the truck is facing away from the plane with damage to the cab area.

Plane probably yawed right from first impact and made hte second impact.

My guess anyways...

Also can't quite read the fin... Is it 321 or 311?

Indeed. I wonder whether the fuel truck was speeding or not driving in the designated lanes?

Fin number 311 in former Air BC, C-FACV. Fin number 321 is former Time Air plane C-GETA.

According to Tom Podolec's Twitter, it was the plane that spun 180 degrees. That truck must've been moving.

The article says that the flight had landed and was taxiing to the terminal, so I'm guessing that the engine was running. If so, it's lucky that it wasn't much much worse, I'm imagining that propeller carving up the truck's cab or even worse, a tank full of fuel (and also imagining where that fuel could end up... like all over the running engine).

Just imagining what could have happened .

From globe and mail. Seems truck hit plane 3 times...

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/ ... raCVU3lxLs

"A spokeswoman for Peel Regional Police said the truck hit the plane three times, and five people – the pilot, co-pilot and three passengers – were treated for minor injuries.

Const. Iryna Yashnyk said the man driving the fuel truck was not injured and faces a charge of dangerous driving.

A spokeswoman for Jazz Aviation, which operated the flight under an agreement with Air Canada, said one of the injured passengers remained in hospital Friday morning.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada said it was deploying a team of investigators to the scene..."

The fuel truck hit the AC Express aircraft. Header implies that the plane hit the truck. Truck hit the plane three times. Truck driver has been charged with dangerous driving. The Sudbury-bound flight was returning to the terminal due to weather conditions in Sudbury.

I’m still wondering the sequence of collision because the damage is in the front, yet the fuel truck is in the back….
In addition, the propeller is damaged.

We've seen these types of accidents before in other transport modes. I've seen train accidents where a vehicle hits the front of the train then spins around striking the train a second or third time as the train is in motion as well.

Truck hits the nose area - plane spins around it's axis - prop hits the truck during the spin - then truck impacts the tail.

The truck was potentially heavier and with more mass than the aircraft.

I see in the CBA News article that one of the pax wasn't "impressed" with the evacuation. Well, what can you expect when both pilots and the flight attendant is hurt?

Considering that after they posted that, the airline said that the captain received "minor injuries" and only one passenger remained hospitalized, I think we have a clearer picture of what DIDN'T happen.

Yes but assuming career ending is a bit extreme! Crews are usually forced to go to the hospital in situations like this for many reasons, including encouragement from ALPA OSH.

Not sure how much the Dash 8 weighs, but if that fuel truck was full, it could be close to 100,000 lbs. I’m thinking that truck could easily spin that aircraft around. I’d put money on the fact that the driver wasn’t paying attention, and at night, lights on an aircraft definitely blend in with surrounding lights of the airport...a good recipe for what happened here. Just my opinion, by the way...

avg landing weight is 36-38k betting it was lighter since it went all the way to YSB and back... I would agree with your hypothesis based on my experience with YYZ and flying the plane.

That sure would of been an unlucky flight to be on last night. AC8615, last flight of the day up to YSB, scheduled to depart at 21:30, on a short 50 min hop north. Doesn't depart until just after 23:00. Gets up to Sudbury just to circle the airport for a half hour trying to land in the fog and heavy rains we were having up here last night. Gives up the landing attempt and flies back to YYZ arriving back around 01:30, two and a half hours in the air instead of the 50 min, just to get smucked by a fuel truck taxing back to the gate. Sometimes all the cards seem stacked against you. Thankfully the outcome of the collision wasn't much worse.

The incident aircraft seems to be 28 years old based on AirFleets. With that kind of damage, it's pretty likely it'll be scrapped. Repairing that kind of structural damage will be much more than the aircraft is worth.
If you flew today, thank a Flight Dispatcher!

It's likely there is some engine damage on the side that has the bent prop?

Probably correct, it’s got over 60K cycles on it and who knows if it’s had the extended life program on it yet... it being a -311 makes it tricky for Jazz since they had no plan to retire any of them.

It's likely there is some engine damage on the side that has the bent prop?

I know that once on a Lycoming IO 360 engine that came into our FBO’s mtc center with a bent crankshaft. To think the guy clipped a snowbank with the prop.

As for the PW123, likely based on the damage from just the propellers alone, there’s bound to be damage in the prop gearbox area... as for the internal turbine parts, I couldn’t tell if that had any contact to it from the truck at all but likely there’d be some form of damage.

Same here. They recently opened/ bought out ASIG where I work and have replaced all the truck with new ones. They don't look so new now, almost every one has dents and scrapes along the tanks.
We have to keep planes airworthy. That doesn't mean they have to fly.

Is this a situation where MCAS would have been of proper use?

Menzies Collision Avoidance System?
