Reason behind 12H+ AC recent delays from Oz?

Sun May 12, 2019 2:48 pm

Hi fellow Anetters
I get the YVR transpacific landings come over my place around 6000' so almost always notice them on the back patio when sipping my G&Ts in the good weather days
Over the last week I've noticed two very significant delayed Air Canada flights come in at 7 or 8 pm instead of the usual 7am ish. One from SYD and one from MEL (12 and 13 hours delayed respectively). Any idea why these lengthy delays....not seen this before and wondered if technical or weather down under?

Certainly not weather down here, it isn't good but it's not bad enough to warrant any 12hr delay.

Seems like it's just simply due to not enough planes.

Instead of doing 2x YYZ-YVR-SYD-YVR-YYZ in 4 days, the plane did YYZ-YVR-SYD-YVR-SYD-YVR-SYD-YVR-YYZ by cancelling the domestic leg and a 12hr delay for one of the YVR-SYD-YVR round-trip.

The same apply for MEL. Instead of running domestic/trans-con route after morning arrival at YVR, the plane would fly back and forth between MEL and YVR with 12hr delay for one of the round-trip.

Thanks. I travelled home me this Thursday on 789 EWR-YVR and the FA told me she was now on a series of Hawaii runs that were all 737 Max previously
Hence a knock on lack of wide bodies

There are a lot of changes with aircraft and schedules due to the 737 MAX grounding. For example, I was supposed to be on an A321 from Toronto out to Vancouver this afternoon but I showed up to see that it was a 787-9. I have a flight out to Phoenix next month that has been "changed" about four times since I booked it a month ago.
