BA retimes LHR-BOM Flight

Sat May 18, 2019 5:06 pm

Just noticed BA has changed the timing for the daytime LHR-BOM flight starting June 14th.
BA139 that currently departs at 10:00 AM from LHR will depart at 17:50 as BA135 from LHR starting June 14th. That is about 4 hours before BA199 departs for BOM.
So that makes it 2 daytime flights on BA flying BOM-LHR.
I am guessing this is to replace the morning BOM-LHR flight that was operated by 9W. BA probably sees more value in operating 2 daytime flights departing BOM.

Anybody knows if there is any other reason for dropping the early morning 2:00 AM departure out of BOM?

That's incorrect. BA135 is a new flight starting from June 2nd, operated four weekly in addition to their exisiting twice daily on the route. So with this new service, they are up to 18 weekly services on the route. The midnight BA138/139 service remains.

No need of a new thread. This can be discussed in Indian aviation thread

I went back and looked but cannot find BA139 if you are traveling from June 14th to the 30th. Starts again on July 1st.

What’s with people on here assuming anyone has the time or desire to go one of the mega posts and read through every page?

Thanks for the post, OP. Wonder if BA will take it to 3 daily year round anytime soon.

From N809FR: What’s with people on here assuming anyone has the time or desire to go one of the mega posts and read through every page?

I agree. As an example someone started a new thread on what HND flights DL had been awarded. That was locked and people were supposed to post on a thread that I think had 500+ entries already that was on the more broad topic. I thought the DL only thread should have stayed as it was more specific and one could start discussing in relation to the now announced routes.

On that note, it's also painful to see 50 10 post threads for each event. A large thread provides a central platform to discuss everything. Many times different events and issues are interrelated and a large thread helps in consistent discussions

BA138 is perfect for me. Have a full day in BOM and then a full day in London unless I need to connect to the US, which is of ample opportunity. I love late night flights.

Wondering why the 4x weekly flight sits on the ground for so long in BOM - wouldn't it disqualify BA134 from meeting some of the afternoon ex-LHR US-bound connections, as well as a number of European ones? There's no way that BA138, which is timed for India to US connections, can carry all of the US-bound traffic from BOM.

To reiterate what has been extensively discussed on other threads regarding this and other related developments which may have been missed by users on here ; this flight is primarily targetting the large O&D pax between LHR-BOM and not necessarily aimed at US connections. However, if connections are possible, then happens so by default.
Reason for this new flight being; the main carrier (Jet Airways) of this route shutdown recently and operated thrice daily using a 77W. So a huge void has been created in terms of seats on this sector for which BA is trying to tap into. I'm sure this route will go thrice daily by winter.

I get what your saying However there not 50x 10 post treads on anything there can be maybe 3-6 treads on a hot topic. Having a big tread for all stuff makes big mega treads that I don't follow and with too much house cleaning makes the site appear dead and stale. There is a balance.

Should probably change the thread title, it's a 4x weekly service increase, not a retiming of existing service.

If Jet flew three daily B77W on BOM-LHR and BA is adding one 216-seat B789 four times a week - was there overcapacity which is now more right-sized or have other airlines chipped in as well?

Could this be a useful route for the new A350-1000?

For Jet, BOM-LHR was one of its most lucrative routes. Ofcourse they had the whole India feed and such, but O&D is strong. BA adding only 4 weekly for now has got to do more with LHR being slot constrained and them probably having to axe other flights to add more BOM flights, like they already have axed a JNB flight for this new rotation. Air India has got rights to add two more daily flights, but again AI has shortage of aircraft and other operational issues which makes them unable to add new flights. No other Indian carrier is capable yet for non-stops to UK. So only BA has the chance to seize the opportunity now, which they did pretty quickly with this addition.

11pm to roughly 6am is the most busy time for international arrivals and departures in and out of BOM......the international terminal is super busy at that time.....

BA has teh A380 in its fleet. If it can't get more LHR slots to do LHR-BOM why can't it upguage capacity by using its A380s?

Between 12 AM and 2 AM is around the time most North American and European airlines are departing back to Europe if they only operate one daily flight to India, except for Finnair.

The 380 schedule is tight but efficient t. No slack to add without taking away from somewhere else which is extra difficult on a non daily basis.

And why make wholesale schedule adjustments for what might be a temporary market adjustment. Once it becomes clear no one else is stepping in this may become daily or year round 4 days.

For now neither BA nor AI have spare frames to do.much else

10 years ago when I flew LHR-BOM regularly, BA was flying twice daily 744s. Plus Jet twice daily and Virgin as well. Now BA is up to 18 per week but on smaller planes, so must be significantly fewer seats on the route than back then. All goung via DXB/AUH I guess?

There is a lot of price sensitive O&D traffic between UK and India which I guess BA let go to an extent

Something to also keep in mind is that 10 years ago BA was carrying a lot of traffic from Indian beyond LHR as well. North America & Africa. But over the last 10 years the ME3 have increasingly taken share from that market with services to Tier 2 Indian cities. eg., BA flies to 5 destinations in India v 9 for EK.

I'd rather love to see a club suite fitted 77W at BOM. BA will have 2 such a/c by the end of the year.

This route today has less capacity than what it had in '98. I hope AI starts a second daily with 77W too .
The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today

If you're connecting to go across the Atlantic, other parts of the UK, Ireland or need to be in London that morning, some people don't have a choice but to take that flight. I'm sure there are flights available at more sociable times if an overnight departure is out of the question for some folk.

Is a VS return to Mumbai out of the question? With Jet gone, expansion starting again and then having spare Heathrow slots currently babysat by Flybe Q400s then there must be some options?
