Winnipeg (YWG) tranformation since 2003

Mon May 20, 2019 9:56 pm

I remember seeing these two photos (dating from 2003 & 2005 respectively), probably in 2005, and I also remember telling myself that's a lot of runways for what looks like a rather sleepy airport. In 2005, YWG served a total of 3,231,888 passengers, 2,7 million of which were domestic.

Here you get to see the old and new terminals, with the latter opening for business back in 2011. The old one had nine gates while the current has eleven.

On this sattelite view visual changes to the infrastructure are clear. However, with 4,484,343 passengers welcomed in 2018 (+38,7% since 2005), the vast majority of which are still domestic, what is the terminal's capacity and were they preparing for a stronger growth when they decided to build it?

I used to live near GFK and flew out of Winnipeg a few times for both Canadian and non Canadian destinations. I did get a second look by Canadian customs when flying to a U.S destination, but nothing crazy.

Just flew there last week ... BOS-YYZ-YWG-DEN-BOS ... first time in the new airport (my last visit there was in 2008).

The new terminal is a vast improvement ... huge halls and baggage area, clean, lots of gates ... mostly empty though!

Like most airports, all depends upon the time of day you’re there. Also, YWG’s summer traffic spikes quite a bit during the summer peak compared with May.

Re the number of runways don't forget that they are shared with Canadian Forces Base Winnipeg which is the home of 17 Wing, 1 Canadian Air Division & the Canadian NORAD headquarters along with various training schools.

I wasn't aware of the Forces and NORAD at YWG.

Pleasant terminal that is YWG with lots of room for growth. International flights are Sun and US. I don't think Hawaii gets a non-stop in Winter. In 16 or 17 WestJet tried a bi-weekly B767 service to LGW, but discontinued ever since. Icelandair was for years rumoured to start Winnipeg even before YYC, YEG, YVR, but the strong community with Icelandic origins in Manitoba wasn't enough apparently to justify a service.

WS still fly YWG-LGW weekly summer seasonal on the 763. It’s a short season though from late June to just before Labour Day.
